Irritation with how retirement's handled...

If anyone knows of a "fix" for how retirement / vacation days are handled, I'd appreciate it.  My gripe is that in the real world if you quit/get fired/retire, you get paid for unused vacation time.  Most of my sims have anywhere upwards of 4 vacation days when they hit elder status, and it just infuriates me that if I have them retire, those days don't count.

Just take those days off, and then retire.

To be honest, by the time my sims retire, I no longer need to worry about their money.

I'm with Arkali. Maybe it's my many years of working in a civil service job, but a Sim with 10 or 15 vacation days EARNED them and deserves the pay for them. Not all of my families have tons of Simoleons by the time they turn elder. And if I recall correctly, somewhere (perhaps the Prima Guide?) I read that they would be paid for them. Doesn't happen, though.

Maybe if you work for a bureaucracy, but definitely not always the case in the private sector.

Kutto's got the right idea: just take a vacation before your Sims retires.

Don't you hate it when your sim is an elder waiting to retire (or die) but he/she can't because they need to use up that vacation time? Well, now they can. And the money contributes towards their wealth memory/wants.

That's what I do, but it's a pain.  And they don't always need the money, but it's the principle of it.

And I've never heard of a company not paying for unused vacation time.  Maybe that's just me, though.  Oh, to clarify - I'm not counting entry level and minimum wage jobs, here.

When I quit my old job, they made use up my vacation time before quitting rather than just paying me for it, so I had to quit two weeks early.
In my case it was just two weeks, and it didn't matter much, but I know the rule can be used to prevent employees from quitting by forcing them to go on a six week vacation at the end of their contract, and thus preventing them from starting a new job because you're still "employed".
I've said it before; Norway put the "crazy" in "bureaucracy".

Why would they want to delay/prevent an employee from quitting. In the states, if you quit and give notice, they often say "don't need it, just leave, here let's escort you out" and pay you for the notice time too. they don't want disgruntled employees sticking around.

I think it's the whole mentality of the contract.  "I own you until this date; and I can prevent you from doing anything you want to do until the contract expires."  If you have a mean employer, that happens, and the meanest are the state owned companies that do everything by the book, even when the book obviously has its head up its proverbial ass.
When I worked at a hospital I saw them deny someone on sick-leave working half-time, because they might be contageous.  She was suffering from a depression after her husband's death from cancer.

It probably is contagious. Who wants to listen to someone whine all day? However, I doubt it was "depression". Depression is when people are whiny bitches for no apparently good reason. That actually qualifies as a reason, albeit a weak one, but you know how weakling humans are.

Isn't that the same thing as quitting? Does it really matter whether you quit now and collect your payout immediately, or go on "vacation" that you don't return from while getting paid for it?

Ah I see. In the states, it's not the contract that rules - it's the almighty dollar. Disgruntled employees can, and sometimes will, do things that are Bad For Business, so they're anxious to get rid of them. Same with sick ones - no sick leave, just go away. Not better for the common man, just differenter.

I wouldn't want disgruntled employees hanging around either. It's easier to tell them to just go and pay them, rather than have to increase security due to the risk they might have shoot up the place when they snap sometime during the two weeks you try to hold onto them.

Everyone else is terrified to go in in the mornings, afraid they'll find a post-it (it's a pretty massive layoff for the industry.) They should have to pay for the extra security, but they're probably too cheap. If they're dumb enough to disgruntle people unnecessarily, they deserve whatever they get.
