Photoshop CS. I guess I just use Photoshop because it's what I 'grew up' with. When I first got in to 'real' computers (i.e. moved on from the Atari ST and the Amiga) I got hold of a Mac LC plus Quark and Photoshop.

It was fantabulously slow. Want to print out a proof page in A4? Should be done in about 45 minutes. Want to print out a complete proof of a 64 page magazine? Hit print and come back in a couple of days (generally to find that the third page in had jammed). Still, Photoshop was incredible to me in those days and, like anyone using that sort of kit, I learned to be patient.

Actually, I was always patient thanks to the use of industrial scale narcotics and unutterable laziness. I have always been the sort who is happy to sit and watch an entire defragmentation of a disc. Sad, but true.

I tried GIMP. Didn't like it at all. It produced artifacts when editing images, pixels didn't move around the way they should, etc., etc.

Hmmm...I didn't have that experience at all.  Undecided

I like Photoshop 7 and whatever comes with my newest digital picture taking device. And Paint when I don't have another choice.

Sounds like they're referring to an old testing version from about 5 years ago. GIMP is nice and shiny nowadays. GIMP is up to 2.2.13 (or 2.3.11 if you like testing new features).

Is it better now? I tried it way back when, back in the TS1 days, but I guess it's improved since then.

I use Photoshop Elements too. Works perfectly well.

Seems I use the "light" version of everything.  Wink Well, except for Sims.

I wouldn't have called GIMP a serious image editor even 2 years ago, but it improved a great deal recently.

It's insane how many Photoshop Elements versions they have made since CS, they just released 5.0 not too long ago.  I'm wondering how much they're actually changing with these upgrades, or they're just tinkering around making a more bloated interface.  The last version of it that I tried was 3.0, so it's probably a little different now.

I could see where MSPaint could have its uses (Pixel Art), but for what most people use a Image Manipulation program like CinePaint or GIMP would be better.

Yes, but I lack any skills of an artist, so the only thing I ever produce is crude diagrammatic doodles.

It means that I generally only create technical illustrations and crude vector diagrams, generally explaining some peculiar aspect of physics in a game, like why the autopilot is buggered.

I use Adobe Photoshop Elements, because it was photoshop that I really started to learn to edit photos with and it came free with our scanner.

I've got Gimp and PSP, but I use Photoshop Elements the most. It's just the easiest one for me, and I usually don't need all the features from the other ones. I use Irfanview a lot (it's set as my picture viewer), and PhotoFiltre sometimes. PhotoFiltre is a great program with which to learn the basics of image editing.

I definitely use Irfanview as my default image viewer. It loads the quickest and cropping pics is a breeze.

The GIMP is great; especially since there's now a portable version at http://portableapps.com/ that I can load on my USB hard drive and take with me.

For lighter tasks, though, I still use Image Analyzer quite a bit. It's also free, loads instantly, is easy on system resources...and, while it doesn't have all the options of other programs, I can easily find and understand the ones it does have.

I don't recommend installing RC1 it due to the fact the Defragmenter really doesn't work right (Diskeeper doesn't work on Vista either) and it always seemed to use 10% of my PC power (Pentium Core Solo 1.66Ghz) even in the "Ye Olde Windoze" Theme.  Besides that, it forces a larger size for the icons and makes it very confusing to get around if you're used to XP.  They've also slapped a shiny coat of paint on their older programs such as Minesweeper, Microsoft Paint, and Solitaire so they have that going for them.

CorelDRAW X3's pretty nice compared to Adobe Illustrator CS2, and it's $100 cheaper.  I'm guessing Paint Shop Pro X1 came out this summer or something, but I'm not even interested in it anymore since the Corel people screwed it up.

My Image Viewer?  I use Microsoft Windows XP, but I do have something installed called Microsoft Office Picture Viewer that is better than the default one but I really don't use it since double clicking an image takes me into PS CS2.

Wow. There must not be many people on the Vista team who remember DOS 6.

At the top of the Hippocratic Oath for OS programmers, it should read: "First, do no harm to users' files and file structure."
