THANKS THIS IS GREAT

The game states that my sims that owe business are simply "unemployed"

Yet when i had a look at a townie managers work things it states "manager" or something.

Is this meant to be the way?  That sims that own buisnesses are just unemployed according to the game?

Check here.

Apparently, it's by design, or at the very least, maxis never gave it a thought.  Your sims will always be "unemployed" unless they actually have a career of some sort (the ones you can get from the base game on up).  Owning a business doesn't mean they're "employed", even though it does provide them a source of income.

In a way, it's not all that unrealistic.  You could be a rich business owner and have the resources to never actually even see, let alone do any work in "the office".  While you'd have plenty of cash, you'd not, in fact, have a "job" to do as it were, and hence, you could essentially qualify as "unimployed" -all depending on your definitions I suppose.

Normally, my spiffy avatar-matched banner-thingy goes here.  Since no one else here seems to use those though, and I have nothing particularly witty to add, this space has been intentionally left (not entirely) blank.

Another thing to bear in mind is that a business owner can also have a traditional job.  I have some Sims that own a business and only visit it on their days off from being Mad Scientists.

And if it still bugs you, there are custom careers out there called 'self-employed' and 'happily unemployed' that don't send your sim anywhere, don't pay him/her anything, but keep your sim from constantly rolling wants for a particular career. I believe the thread KittKitt pointed you to has info about them.

I have a "Business Owner" career.  Not sure where I got it from, but I know it was linked to on this site somewhere.
