What is a portal?

Reading about Crammyboy's juggling fix.  I'm new to hacks so I just have to ask, "What is a portal?".

Ok, thanks where sims, vehicles appear/dissapear.  Next part, are there portals on sims?  For example when objects appear in hands?

Here is my non-technical answer:

You know the spots on the lot where sims appear and disappear - the townies walking by, the mailman, etc - at that spot is a portal. There are also portals where the vehicles - school bus, car, maid's van - appear and disappear.

a portal is where the school bus appears, or sims appear to walkby youre house.   carpool portal and the pedestrian portal
