Stuck trying to move in - too many sims

THANKS THIS IS GREAT

I have searched for this, but haven't found anyone else with this problem. Maybe I'm blind, so sorry.

My active family has 6 sims, my guy sim just married and up pops the box which lets you choose who else can move in with her. New hussy wife already has 4 children and no other adults on her lot. So, obviously they can't stay where they are on their own, but they also cannot move into my active family (apparently, 11 sims is more than 8 sims, or something). I also cannot move the newly weds into her house because she doesn't seem to actually HAVE one. I can also neither cancel or confirm anything. Nor can I work out how to shut down the game without just restarting my computer. Is there anything I can do, or am I doomed? Also, how do I stop this from happening again (when I last checked, she had a guy living with her, but he seems to have vanished into thin air).

Thanks in advanced and sorry for being a fool.

You could try just bringing up task manager and shutting it down that way.

As for having it not happen again, turn off story progression, move someone in with her, have just her move in with hubby, then enable story progression again.
