Question about hair families

I'm trying to organize all my hair files, including putting them into families when I can. I haven't done this before and I have a couple questions --

1) from what I understand, once all the hair colors are in the same family, you can delete all the elder greys except one custom and one of the non-custom greys. Is this correct?
2) if the hair family has two colors in the same bin (like a platinum blond and strawberry blond) should they not be put into the same family? That is, will the game only choose one to display in the blond bin?

2) No, you can have as many in the blonde bin as you want.
