crashing

I can't access my game(nightlife). It crashes at vroom sounds, in a vanilla game with a new xp user.
It started with a former hard disk.
Since then, I have changed disks, reinstalled the game. When I tried it, it loaded, so I put back in my user data.
Today, I try to play, and it's the same as before. I try with a new XP account, so no user data, and it is the same. Locked out again.
I'm going to reinstall again, but if you have any ideas, i'd be eternally grateful.

Seems like a driver issue to me.  Have you updated all your sound and video drivers?  If your drivers are all recent, it could be the problem too, you might have to roll back to a previous version.

When you say you are using a new drive, does that mean you reloaded XP as well?

Yes, everything is new.
I went back to older drivers before changing hard drives, no change.
So with my new install, I tried with the old video drivers, and then the new ones, and it worked.
Then I had a crash, and was told to update the audio drivers, I did.
So everything has new drivers now.
The only recurring problem I have is with my network card.

You'd think it would be related to the audio.  I'd try disabling the sound card at the device level just as a test.

If that works it would make me wonder if the card is defective, assuming the problem came suddenly, there was no change to the system and it worked fine before.

I think you could check that with dxdiag, couldn't you?

Does the game crash before or after you've loaded it?  When you try to enter a neighbourhood, or when you try to enter a lot?

Thank you for the suggestions.
I have now put in the new game with patch and christmas pack: my hacks, the modular stairs script, and the custom neighborhood camera.
And it crashes.
Could you tell me again where you are supposed to paste the stairs?
And could anyone send me a neighborhoodcamera file, stupid me didn't save before switching.

Did it crash after you put those items in, or before?  If after, then you first need to pinpoint which of them is causing the crash to happen.

Well, I reinstalled, put in a new camera hack, and it crashed only when I modified the modular stairs script. When I took the new stairs out, it loaded.
Has anyone had the same problem?

Just take out all objects that cause crash. Sometimes not updated hack do it too.

Well, if it's the modular stiars, I would think you need to go to the thread (MTS2?) where you downloaded them and see if anyone else has had problems.
