Stupid question about Downloads folder
« on: 2007 June 15, 01:56:53 »
THANKS THIS IS GREAT

As indicated by the title, this is probably a pretty dumb question, so feel free to poke with sticks.  I feel compelled to ask it because I'm afraid I'll mess up yet another neighborhood, and the search function yielded no useful results.

My neighborhoods are spread out over 2 users on this computer.  I would like to have identical Downloads folders for both users.  If I copy + paste the Downloads folder from this user to the other, will the CC in said folder actually work, with no modification or tinkering?  Or do I need to go through the process of culling all package files and re-installing everything on the other user?

TIA for any help.  Smiley

With the exception of the CEP, I think your CC should all work fine.
Note, however, that I've not tried it, so your mileage may vary.

I have two user accounts and I just copied the downloads folder from one account to the other.  When I update hacks, I also make sure to copy them from one account to the other.

I've had no problems whatsoever.

I do it across computers, so there's no problems just across accounts (CEP included) The only problem is that if you have a lot of content, it's taking up the space more than once.

Thanks so much y'all.  The folder is 859 MB, but I haven't noticed any horrendous slowdown (either in the game or with other programs) other than slightly longer loading times.  Hopefully all will go well.

Note that if you have Pets or Seasons, you can place your Downloads in the Overrides folder in (Pets/Seasons directory)\TSData\, and they'll be loaded globally (which reduces duplication if you play using the same .exe).

Mine is in C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\The Sims 2 Seasons\TSData\Res\Overrides

It contains something I've never seen before:

HolidayNewYearsPartyPhoneCall_Override.package

I don't have any holiday packs.  Hm.

EA borked all (or most, not sure) phone plugins in Pets, including their own "Throw Party...\New Year's Party" phone plugin, so they include that file to fix the problem in every version of the game post-Pets, regardless of if you have the Holiday Pack or not. Of course, the fix is also slightly broken (but only if your language is set to something other than En-US, due to what I assume to be MSWord checking of the pie-menu strings).

Please excuse my ignorance, but what does this mean?  I simply made another user, logged on to it, then loaded up the game.  None of the game files are in the Shared folder.  But, since it is the "same" game, does that mean that both users are using the same .exe?  Huh

Yes -- the contents of the C:\Program Files\EA GAMES\<etc> remain the same, and are used by all the users on the computer. Only the contents in the particular users My Documents\EA GAMES\<etc> vary.  Lots of folks create multiple users so they can have a regular game with all their custom content, and a 'plain vanilla' game for testing, building and the like.

But if you put stuff in the Overrides folder mentioned previously, it'll appear in all users' games, regardless of the content in their particular My Documents folder. Handy for having some custom content (such as the bonus files that you can get with each EP/SP) appear in every game.  Plus, I believe stuff in this folder doesn't show up as cc in the game (no asterisk).

I still don't get why people don't just create multiple sims 2 folders. I have a vanilla one - for testing, my cyberhood, a more traditional hood etc. I just rename the folders as needed depending on what I want to play. Much easier and quicker than swapping users all the time. Mind you, I am the only person on my PCs so I boot straight to the desktop, so don't bother with the welcome / login screen.

That's what I do, too. it's the easiest way for me to switch between building (totally clean), challenge (somewhat clean) and regular (chock-full-o-crap) configurations.

Because some of us believe that if we are going to grace others with our wonderful creations they can swallow everything and damn well get the necessary expansion packs?

Ya'll are just too nice.

Er, a clean game doesn't help with that anyway. Every EP you have installed is installed on the whole computer, and you have to go to great lengths to get around that (i.e. base game starter, etc.). A clean game is just an unmodified one -- it's for building with no custom content, or being able to have a medieval neighborhood full of default replacements without having all the medival content in your normal hood, or whatever.

I never meant to have 2 users for the game.  I started out with the one, with just the 3 Maxis 'hoods and a custom.  Then my SO started playing WoW and other games- including TS2- on my PC, so he had his owner user for that stuff.  Then he got his own (much nicer) PC, and I started playing WoW too.  Then I just took over his TS2 'hoods on his user as well.  So now I have 10 neighborhoods, all to myself.  Mineminemineminemine.  Cheesy

So do you just put the folder named Downloads into the Overrides folder, complete with subfolders?  And do you have to move it into whatever your current EP .../Overrides folder is, or can you move it into either Pets... or Seasons... and leave it there, even when the next EP comes out?
