So do we know how genetics work in this game yet? One of the things I really missed in TS3 was the genetics, and being able to see specific traits passed down through generations like you could in TS2.
I've been testing this out a bit in game and it seems like it's using the TS3 style coin flip method when it comes to inheritance of hair and eye colour. Black hair and blonde hair have the same chance to be passed down for example, so there's no dominance system in place. I haven't had enough time to mess about with sims that are several generations in to see if an individual can pass on genes belonging to a parent or grandparent that they themselves do not display.

Fish tanks instead of bowls. It would be cool if you put the wrong kinds of fish together they'd eat each other. I really hate the fish bowl, I feel bad putting anything other than a minnow in it. I wish that they'd give the sims the ability to look at their fish again and not just feed them, isn't that the whole point of pet fish?

I'm running with a pair of Nvidia 8800 GTS cards (1.4gb of memory between them) and I've been having crashes that freeze up my whole computer. The screen freezes (or sometimes flashes like a fucking strobe-light) and the mouse/keyboard become totally non-responsive leaving me with no other option that to turn off my computer manually. I've been looking around on the internet and found a few other people who have been having the same problem, they're all using Nvidia 8 series cards.
Basically, I'm wondering if this could be fixed in a future patch for the game or by a future driver update by Nvidia? Otherwise I'll just have to give up on TS3 or get myself a new pair of video cards.

If you think back to TS2, metal wasn't bought in until a later EP.
There was definitely a metal music station in the base game. All of the music stations that came with the base game have songs without credited artists (unlike later EPs that had songs by well known artists in them), the metal station is one of them.

Traits:Artistic. Computer Whiz. Coward (Even at 22 18 I'm still afraid of the dark). Family Orientated. Genius (I don't really consider myself a genius IRL but I think that you need this trait to unlock the lifetime wish for the science career). Bookworm. Couch Potato. Good sense of humour. Heavy Sleeper. Neat. Lifetime Wish:Become a Creature-Robot Cross Breeder. Favourites:Fish and Chips. Classical Music (Why is there no "metal" option?) Black. Voice:Voice 3 at a higher pitch. Her hair is from the store, I have no idea what would happen if you tried to use this sim and don't have that particular hairstyle installed. Go download it in the TS3 Store thread in Peasantry. *edit* Update on Puddingcraft: I have overcome the feeble pedestrian limitations on trait maximum in Awesomemod. Now you can reflect the true you with as many traits as it takes, at least on the list. Feel free to list additional traits you rightfully deserve...although if they're bad ones, I'm sure we already can supply them for you. Sic Semper Tyrannosaurus!
Extra traits have been added accordingly.

If only there was some way for new members to get a feel for how things work around here before they go and make fools of themselves... Like intelligence comes down to that. Intelligent people can make mistakes, yes, but the difference between them and you is that they take the criticism given to them and try to learn from it. They don't throw a hissy fit when someone presents them with the opportunity to better themselves. SimplyComplex, if you don't like how people interact with each other here then don't get involved; your opinion is not that valuable or important. I don't know why you feel the need to try and point out the "error" of our ways, in doing so you are being much more rude than the people you are criticising.

I finally managed to fix my game (managed to get a corrupt install two times in a row) and I've been playing for most of the last 24 hours. I like the game. I suppose that I'll do up a list of what I like and what I don't, just because all the cool kids are doing it. I liked: - Moodlets. They are more dynamic and realistic than I had expected.
- The expanded interactions. Sure, "ask about day" and "enthuse about house" may both be more or less identical interactions but it does manage to give the impression that you can now do more than just chain chat/hang out/gossip until the sims are friends.
- I like the rabbit holes. My reasons are more or less the same as expressed by Pescado above. I don't want to watch my sim shop or take a cooking class.
- The new labels in the relationship panel. Husband/wife rather than "married", daughter/son rather than the generic "family" label.
- The eye textures. I know that most of you seem to hate them but, in fairness, they look a lot better than the default eyes in TS2. They also, coincidentally, resemble one of my favourite eye-sets from TS2.
- The CAS. Contrary to popular opinion, I don't think that it's all that hard to make a unique sim. Although I would recommend putting the "head width" slider all the way to the left to get rid of the whole fat-head thing.
- It's great that going to a community lot is so easy now. My sims never used to leave their homes unless it was necessary because it was such a pain in the ass to get anywhere.
- That it feels different. I was becoming so bored with TS2 that I'm glad that this is more of an overhaul than just "TS2 with better graphics".
- The fact that the rest of the neighbourhood looks after itself and continues on without me. As someone who rarely plays more than one or two families seriously I'm really loving this new element of gameplay.
I mean, if I really want to have full control again I can always fire up TS2. It's not like I can't have both of them installed at the same time.
I didn't like: - The fact that hair, eye and skin colour don't have genetic values anymore. I understand that it would have been very difficult to give them fixed values now that we can pick from such a huge range of colurs but I'm sure that there could have been a way to work around that. They could have given us a genetic slider so that we could assign specific pigment dominance at our own discretion, it would have been nice to be able to make some eyes really dominant and others extremely recessive.
- The skin tones are awful. I'm really hoping that people will find a way to override textures in the game in the near future. They are just too low-res and plain for my taste.
- Animation glitches. Hopefully this will be fixed in a patch.
- Gender is not taken into account when a child is being assigned its facial structure. There is no effort to feminise inherited masculine traits or vice-versa, there are so many little girls running around with manly jaw lines.
- Lack of hair/clothes meshes. A minor gripe and one that I know will be rectified in later EPs.
All in all, I think that I'm going to enjoy playing this almost as much as I enjoyed playing TS2 when it first came out.

I've only managed to play a little because the game keeps crashing to the desktop, no error messages or anything. It's happened four times in a row now, each time I only managed to get a few minutes of play in before the game crashed.
Is anyone else having this problem?
So, all I've really had the chance to enjoy is the new CAS. I'm liking what I've seen so far, but it doesn't really matter if I can't actually get the game to play for more than a few minutes.

Also, that's a nice house. Is it a rework of the base game "Modern Masterpiece"?
I can't actually remember where I got it from and, unfortunately, I don't have it in my game any more after the big system crash I had last year.

Not to mention the fact that the scalp texture and teen male body texture are a different shade of green leaving you with a witch that's covered in lines! Isn't the scalp texture issue fixed in creaturefixes? Probably. But I made this replacement the first time I ran AL and was still waiting for the DC to be updated.

Due the recent shenanigans at the InSimenator regarding it coming under new management and possibly going pay in the future I've decided to post some of my files elsewhere. Anywho, here's the thread from InSim: "This is greatly based on Stargazer's ambiance mod, found here: Aaron's ambiance mod A lot of basic instructions and troubleshooting can be found in the original thread. Thank you so much Aaron for making the original mod and allowing me to change it I made this altered version of his mod because I was experiencing a problem where my sims acessories would pick up the light differently from the rest of their bodies(see pic below) The changes to Aarons mod: -day and night have both been restored to the maxis style to fix the problem stated above -Both dawn and dusk have been made a little brighter, also to combat the same problem. The changes to the maxis lighting system: -added a "dawn" between 6am and 7am -added a "dusk" between 6pm and 7pm. Installation: -first go to your C/program files/ea games/the sims2/ts data/res/lights and rename the .txt file called "lighting" to "maxis lighting". This way the maxis settings are easy to find if you ever want to restore them. -extract my lighting file( "spooky lighting.txt") to the above directory and rename it "lighting.txt" Just in case you loose your back up of the maxis settings, I have included them in this .rar" Downloadhttp://www.sendspace.com/file/ljbn7mDownload

Probably it sees 2 GB, then, because Vista is chewing up the remaining 3. But when I had only 3GB installed that all showed up fine. You *ARE* using VISTA, after all.
I would have prefered to stay with XP but I got a pair of 8800 GTS cards for my birthday and I didn't want their directX 10 capabilities to go to waste.

@Argon, I'm running the 32-bit version. 64-bit doesn't support sli apparently and I have dual video cards. After doing some more research I found a few possible ways to work around my problem. I enabled PAE, following the intructions here: http://vistarewired.com/2007/03/29/how-to-enable-more-than-35-gb-of-memory-in-32-bit-windows-vista/. It didn't change anything. I downloaded Vista service pack 1 and installed it. This did actually make a difference. My system menu now says that I have 5GB installed. However, dxdiag still says that I only have 2GB installed. I'm not really sure how trustworthy dxdiag is since it displays the incorrect amount of memory for my dual video cards aswell. My system is certainly running faster; but as to whether that's from the newly recognised RAM or the service pack I don't know.

Are all of your RAM sticks made by the same manufacturer? Some sticks don't like talking to each other. So it could be that when you stuck the new one in, it decided it hated RAM stick A so now the two of them are too busy fighting with each other to be accessible.
I have a big hodge-podge of brands. I have the two sticks that came with my computer and then a stick that I bought later (different brand) they all worked together. I bought this 2GB stick today different brand from my original pair and the third stick.
