I've downloaded thw sims 2 business but I ahven't installed it....perhaps that?

thank you all for all of your suggestions.
firstly, i don't have any inventory because i don't have any expansions so it can't be that.
second, i'm a totaly computer noob hence i don't know how to check for custom content. I might have some left over from the last time i was playing the sims (i had to un-install it).
thoughts?

One of my sim families cannot throw any parties. 
I've tried moving them out and moving thme back in to no avail.
I have the Sims 2 with no expansions and no custom content.
When they pick up the phone the option is there however when they start dialing they sort of jump and move a few millimetres and then nothing.

Any ideas???
