TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: EA patch notes lie

I've seen people complain about this, but I've never experienced in my game. Non-actives are constantly doing stuff in my game - reading, playing chess, jogging, etc. Maybe there's some bug that causes a pileup and AI commands don't get pushed, causing the issue above, but it's not "the way things are" in my experience.

All in all, it's a good change, though I think a command to "unlock" a Sim family would be useful. I know some people may switch to a non-played family for just a few seconds to see what's going on, but don't really care if that family later gets manipulated by the story engine if necessary.
I don't think it protects the Sims from other Story Progression events, it just keeps them from being run out of town.

TS3/TSM: The Pudding / Pudding Plots / Re: Modern Wood - a starter home

I also agree with low end furniture for starter homes. Part of the fun for me is slowly upgrading stuff to more expensive, more attractive things as my Sims earn money. When they've worked their asses off enough, I grant them little remodeling projects, much like those in real life, where I'll redo their bathroom or kit out their kitchen. Otherwise, what's there to do with all that money?

TS3/TSM: The Pudding / Facts & Strategery / Re: Work Performance Facts

How efficient is sleeping at work/school vs the bed? Would it make sense for a tired sim to arrive at work early as possible and sleep until work starts?
Sleeping at work is an inefficient way to fill the sleep bar, in my experience. Apparently those doctors' lounge couches are lumpy. It doesn't appear to make a difference if you show up early - it seems that both the energy gain and performance gain only begin once actual working hours are reached.

TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: Hard-to-find conversational options

So if they're all the same 9, does it have no effect on the image the speech bubbles show at all? I thought it did a little bit.
The speech bubbles do vary depending on the topic - favorites are typically shown in "get to know" interactions, discussions about cooking show recipe cards and mixing bowls, etc. TS2 did a much better job of giving conversations the illusion of personality and depth. If they were talking about tennis, they'd show off their serve; if they were discussing their alien abductions, they'd rub their rumps. My favorite was the dirty joke animation where a Sim would illustrate a female body with his hands. In 3, the animations have very little variety to them, and except for a few rare examples, seem to just cycle randomly for each interaction type, regardless of the specific social being used. Simlish also seems extremely limited this time around. In TS2, even after years of playing, it never sounded really repetitive. In TS3, though, I hear things like "How da hail?" all the freakin time. That's probably why conversations are so much shorter in this version; there doesn't seem to be enough unique dialogue to have more than a 2 minute conversation without repeating the same phrases over and over.

I think the fantasy creatures are some sort of in-joke referring to the "no supernatural creatures" stance that Rod Humble has. There are often protests in front of town hall where people protest Yeti (as well as what appears to be Mr. Humble's computer from TS2). Apparently your Sim is pro-supe.
(I miss the conversations in TS2 that you could actually almost follow, complete with relevant animations. I keep trying to analyze the conversations in TS3 and completely fail.)

TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / How do I congratulate a Sim?
|
on: 2009 July 25, 02:17:50
|
I always thought it would have been a nice touch if my Sims could congratulate others on their weddings, new babies, etc., so I was pleased to see the wish roll up today. However, for the life of me, I cannot get that option to come up, even after a long string of successful friendly socials. Has anyone had any luck in congratulating a Sim?

Asking a question, no matter how much initiative you are attempting to show at improving the level of your grammar, apparently doesn't protect you from the wrath of those who know better than you do.
"Is that a misplaced modifier?" suggests littleblackdog doesn't know the answer and wants to learn. "Isn't that a misplaced modifier?" suggests littleblackdog believes he knows the answer and is looking for affirmation. The first type of question seems generally well-received in these parts. The second type may result in wrath and ridicule if the asker is not correct after all.

TS3/TSM: The Pudding / The World Of Pudding / Re: Windowed Mode Sucks.

Unlike in TS2, scrolly edges work fine for me in Windowed mode. It would be hard to believe that EA implemented something to work *better* in OSX than in Windows - did you actually turn on that option? Or do you just mean that with screen-sized windows it won't work because you can't reach the bottom/right edges?
It's definitely on. I can reach the edges no problem - the cursor just slides out of the window. I always assumed this had something to do with not trapping the cursor within the window, for all those people who wouldn't be able to figure out they could just Alt-Tab out.

The only thing I really hate about windowed mode is the inability to use scrolling edges. Like Simius, I just drop down to the next widescreen resolution (since I have a widescreen monitor), which pretty much makes the graphics look identical to full screen. I also haven't noticed any significant performance hits; the benefit of not getting that monster hit when alt-tabbing certainly compensates for any minor hits I take.

Awesomeware / AwesomeMod! / Re: Problem with Awesome and Indie
|

You have to either enable story mode notifications via the aweconfig file a la Awesomemod, or you have to enable notifications once you are in the game via the phone a la Indie Stone, or they won't show up. AwesomeMod's Story Mode notifications do not impact Indie Stone at all. Nothing in Aweconfig has any effect on IndieStone, which is an independent third-party module that uses its own rules. This is why I used the word "or". It seems that doing one or the other of these things should suffice, but that doing both would be redundant. Only one suffices - using the ISM settings in-game. Nothing you set in AwesomeMod will affect ISM's notifications (or any other aspect of ISM's configuration). So, doing both would not be redundant, and doing the wrong one(setting it in aweconfig) would not suffice.

I had some I renamed before IS was installed, and I haven't disabled house moving. All the ones I wanted to stay put have stayed put. Are you saying it won't work to rename lots now IS is in my game?
Correct. The Altos wasted no time in abandoning their manor once I had ISM in. Twas a valuable lesson.

sigh nvvvm. showconfig shows me that inform is on. Indie story driver is being used. indie has the box checked for notification of neighborhoods. I don't know what I'm doing wrong Aside from all of this, even though the notifications aren't popping I can't tell if the functions are working are not I had a problem with ISM not running story events, even after I turned it up to "silly fast". A restart fixed it. Don't know why, but it was suggested on the MTS forums so I tried it and it worked.

^ Interesting. Is there a difference in the age or gender of the sims moved out and in or is the game replacing same with same which, of course, is totally pointless and means design flaw. I haven't payed attention enough in game to notice.
I honestly couldn't say at this point - I haven't played an unmodded game since a few days after AwesomeMod was released.

I have no doubt that there are population limits, my doubt is only that the reason Sims get deleted (emigrated) is in an effort to balance that population. As I said, in the base game, I'd get move out AND move in reports in the same newspaper - if population was the reason for the move OUT, then there should certainly not be a simultaneous move IN. And I was getting move outs within a few days of starting a new game, long before any population concerns could be kicking in.

Can you have multiple boyfriends/girlfriends in this game? I can't seem to be able to propose "going steady" when I already have one, but my romantic interactions are borked in strange ways, so maybe it's only me... (should probably check if I accidentally left one or two conflicting romance mods in ) You can have multiple romantic interests, but only one boyfriend/girlfriend at a time.

Don't know what is meant by 'sock' and definitely not Boer arrogance - I'm as English as they come. I'm slowly getting the drift about how things work on here and the golden rule seems to be 'don't insult Americans' or the fires of hell will rise up to meet you, or you might meet witch on a dark and stormy night.
One way to shake the sock/tard label would be to show an actual interest elsewhere in the forum, rather than sticking to the spot where you're getting all this "unwanted" attention. And I can't speak for anyone else, but I would react this way to any stupid generalizations, not just those against Americans.

Well, you have to remember: A group is always represented by its worst members. This is the rule. It doesn't matter that any individual member you may have encountered doesn't necessarily exhibit all of the worst behaviors, the fact remains that any group is represented by its worst members. That's just how things work: Whenever you evaluate something, you ALWAYS take the worst impression so as to maintain a balanced view of things. All those other instances are just statistical anomalies.
Even with that yardstick in play, even the worst Americans are no worse than the worst citizens of any other countries, so everyone should still end up on fairly equal footing. It's the people who compare the worst of one country with the best of another and (unsurprisingly) come away with unfavorable conclusions that I would like to see DIAF, is my point. Regarding the animals, for the record, there was a baboon in the road where I live, albeit last year more or less. It came from a forest nearby, my brother-in-law saw it. Other suburbs of Cape Town regularly get terrorized by maurauding troops. Google "Cape Town baboon" and some links will come up. On the other hand, flocks of cows and goats being informally pastured on the verges right next to the N2 freeway are an everyday occurrence.
What I think many South Africans forget is that from some perspectives, South Africa *does* have wildlife roaming in the streets. There's the aforementioned bush babies in my yard, the baboon that your brother in law saw, or the one that I saw a few months ago. There are sections of road nearby where meerkats will gleefully run in front of your car to see how hard they can make you swerve. When I lived in Cape Town, I'd take a morning walk to see the seals playing in the surf, or stand amongst the penguins just to feel tall for a while. To most people I know, that's about as wild as you get.
