Am I the only one that misses the photo album from TS2? My favourite thing was taking large, beautiful screenshots and being able caption them, in-game. Whenever I'd go back to a fambly I'd look through the photo album to refresh myself on their little story. I don't feel like I can do that in TS3, or am I missing something?

I had a teen ask his mother to break up with his dad! It was in the friendly menu. Only saw it once. I have actually seen this quite a few times lately w/several famblies and wondered what was up with it... I got with when my sim woohooed with a married sim. Makes sense: ask your lover to leave his wife. I don't know why a teen would want his parents to break up, though -- maybe if he has a terrible relationship with his dad and wants him out of the house. That would be cool!

Maybe there could even be a check instituted that would scan to see if there are any singles left before marrying off the neighbours -- ie, maintaining a minimum number of eligible bachelors/bachelorettes.
Incidentally, I have not been able to make a sim go from zero to married in on day yet; no one in my town should either. I like your idea, Inge, that Young Adults may or may not get married to their loves whereas adults will more readily.

Going back to the topic of romance, could we slow it down a little?
I agree. I posted on this a while back. And I've given it some more thought. Pescado's view is that sims will try to pair up, if you want to do it make 'em sacred. I do agree with that. The problem I was having is my Lothario types with commitment issues getting hitched 40 seconds after they were in the game. I third the romance-is-too-fast motion! The day after my female sim became a young adult, there was not ONE single man left in town. NOT ONE!! She's Good but she's gonna have to be bad now The other problem with this system is the following: I started my neighbourhood by populating it with young adults; some single, some already in couples. I like my sims to play the field a bit before commiting to a life of changing diapers, so by the time my sacred couple DID start having kids, all the other families had teens already. Now my couple's youngest children don't have any peers; they are floating between the youngest of the first generation and the oldest of the second generation. They have no classmates.

Sorry to indulge in 12ish EP speculation, but this thread has got me thinking that perhaps there is a Makin' Magic-type expansion coming. Now that you all mention it, the game is conspicuously devoid of all things mysterious/supernatural, which have always been a hallmark of the series.
The ghosts are, after all, just transparent sims. I'm quite disappointed in/annoyed by them. I'll prolly just delete all my tombstones. There's no drama to the deaths if the Sims never really die! DIE, damn it!! DIE!

I'm almost certain that babies are invincible. I've left them inside burning rooms and starved them for weeks by constantly deleting the social workers that keep coming to try to take them away. If you put them in a pool they will just sit there. Babies can't die! It's only possible to kill children and up AFAIK Yes, the social worker is baby death.

Actually, there is virtually no scientific basis for banning cousin marriage. The chance of congenital defects is less than 2%, which is not significantly higher than the chance of a congenital defect occurring in a union of two people who are more distantly related (as in the case of someone marrying a girl from the same town). The only cases where cousin marriage becomes problematic is if there is a long history of interbreeding, as historically occurred among the European royalty (the Hapsburg lip, culminating the in the absolutely retarded Charles II of Spain, and the mentally challenged Ferdinand of Austria); and now occurs mainly among Muslim immigrants in Europe (as they tend to marry their cousins generations over and over, to bring in entire villages to the West through "family reunion". Most births with Down syndrome are now in islamic families, and there are studies which blame the extreme aggression and high criminality rates among muslims on the inherited mental retardation which was already present in the home countries [most immigrants come from developmentally backwards areas -- even for those countries -- like the Rif mountains in Northern Africa or the Kurd areas of Turkey, where marriage has traditionally been confined to inside the same village for hundreds of years], but through three/four generations of immigrant incest has increased this even further). See also the famous 'Blue Fugates' of Kentucky, and related stories from West Virginia in the US.
The ban on cousin marriage is mostly an American social stigma which was inherited from the Puritans. As TS3 is an American game though...
I can confirm that the stigma is very present in South America, far removed from the American Puritans. I had SECOND cousins in South America that were dating and it was considered quite scanderlous... Interestingly, even SIBLINGS procreating, or a parent and child, have a very low chance of producing spawn with congenital defects. But the incidence of course increases in even fewer generations than with cousins. ANYWAY............ I don't want MY sims to bang their cousins. I dunno. Sounds messy. Aunt/Mother-in-law? Egads..

TS3/TSM: The Pudding / Facts & Strategery / Re: Creating Custom Neighborhoods: My Learnings

I have a question about building custom Gyms and Art Galleries. (note upper case initials!) There must be some kind of special flag for these lots, because if you have, for example, an artistic sim, they throw wants to go to the Art Gallery, and if you click on them they have an automatic option for "going to the Art Gallery." Ditto for athletic sims and the gym... So the game has to RECOGNIZE those lots as those types. I can see that the game might figure out that a gym is a gym because of all the exercise objects, but what about an art gallery? There has to be some way to flag it as an Art Gallery (yes, capital A and capital G!) .... Btw, Flabaliki at MTS has some lots emptied of all the peoples and residential lots, but preserving the community lots, useful for customizing your hood but avoiding all these headaches! http://www.modthesims.info/download.php?t=344655

So my sim got engaged to his pregnant gf -- why preggers? Because the option to "try for baby" came up loooong before proposal, and they were teetering dangerously close to elderhood, so I went ahead and insiminated. Of course she didn't make it to the wedding before having the baby. (Thank God you can change Baby's name at city hall!) It was a 'destination wedding' and she almost didn't show up. Anyways, she did, sans baby, and when the households were merged, what happens to the baby?? It shows up on the doorstep -- but mom and dad are still at the wedding. Oh noes! Baby Home Alone! So we leave the community lot to go home and I get the message : You can't leave {the Baby} alone; call a babysitter. But but -- the baby IS alone -- I'm leaving this lot TO GO TO THE BABY! Anyway, baby death was only narrowly averted.

TS2: Burnination / Oops! You Broke It! / BFBVFS - new AL patch borked some hack? (NOT related to portraits after all)
|
on: 2008 October 08, 19:39:23
|
I played AL for hours yesterday and didn't notice any portraiture regeneration; I didn't even realize it was supposed to be a feature until today... everything was fine, really. So WHY I decided, like a naive fool, to today install the official patch, I will never understand. But I installed it, with the corresponding, new no-cd patch.
NOW my game is fubared. Whenever I load a lot, the sims just keeps resetting, constantly regenerating their portraits, about twice per second, I would say. They just stand in place, constantly changing which direction they're facing like they're in some REM video, but otherwise can't move. Any queued actions get dropped.
Now I read on here about Dizzy's portrait hack and this is the first I've heard of this new portrait feature. Anyway, I tried his hack, but it doesn't really work for the new no-cd patch... maybe it's the new patch that's the problem. Ok, so let's just try NOT using a no-cd patch and going the ol'fashion daemon-yasu method. Doesn't work; I can't load the game.
Anyway, has this happened to anyone else? Maybe I should uninstall the AL patch. Is that possible?

TS2: Burnination / Oops! You Broke It! / Changing Townie Clothing -- wardrobe is empty!
|
on: 2007 November 03, 02:48:36
|
What's the easiest way to change townie's clothing? I'm referring to existing townies, not creating new, custom ones.
I thought i would be all clever and make them selectable and use the clothing tool. But when it gets to the wardrobe part, there is nothing to choose from. You buy the outfit, and there you just can't see it. Even if you make the (now selectable) townie click on a dresser like normal, nothing shows up.
Any thoughts? Thanks again, kids.

Okay, I've tried with a Maxis fridge and the leftovers do indeed work. I had tried with other fridges but they were all custom, too. Funny thing is, ALL my CC in this particular game I've downloaded in June or later, so I guess a lot of fridges out there haven't been updated for Seasons. There was like 5 pages of leftovers in the fridge MAN, so those leftovers hold up well! You don't really have to cook for months if you fill it up! of course the maxis fridge looks silly in my vintage hood. But well.

Has anyone tried using the XTreme-G drivers? I've been using the mobile version (GeForce GO 7900GS on my lappy) and the normals drivers (GeForce 7800GS on my media center pc) for a long time and haven't had a BSOD. I tried this yesterday on my laptop, which has a Geforce 7400. Now instead of the BSOD I got a D3DERR NOTAVAILABLE! error. After some googling I learnt that this error usually means the driver isn't compatible with your hardware. However I got it after 3 hours of gorgeous, smooth gameplay, so.... hm! I'm going to file the Xtreme-G drivers under the "improvement" category.

Thank you for replying and yes, I took out all my food and fridge related hacks (i hope...) This is what they were: Food Already Available Fix Store-food-no-burnt Visitor Snacking Fix No Autonomy Fridges MoveAwayFromFridge .. hm that's quite a few, some kinda redundant really..... but anyway, WITHOUT all those, I still can't retrieve my leftovers. DISABLING custom content altogether, then yeeeah it DOES work. I suppose I have some errant hack somewhere, but Paladin's Hack Conflict Detector isn't detecting any conflicts. Hmph.
