Terrel, he looks like he's had his face kicked in.
Apollo looks a little untouched by human evolution but isn't much worse than "typical townie" ugly.

Others to avoid are social worker, headmasters, repoman, drama professor (others professor are fine) etc. Any NPC with a special behavior actually should be left as NPC and never moved-in. *takes notes*. I like chaos. Can the repoman actually be moved in, and if so does he actually... uh? that wouldn't be good . Okay so I want maximum chaos (altough not actually visible from outer space). Drama Professor x 2 Cow Mascot Headmaster Mr Big, The Diva Streaker Grand Vampire Sound good?

Correct. The only pre-made buildings I've played in are the university and downtown ones. In the original game I quickly (and possibly erroneously) concluded all the houses were designed with maximum inefficiency in mind - traffic jams and such (and that being in the bad old days of hissy fits for route blocking). And besides, building houses is 63.2% of the fun. I'd also avoid 2 story houses like the plauge (but slightly fond of basements). And, I confess, build borderline "pyramid roof" houses . It was actually with the modular stairs that I got more interested in advanced dwelling design.

I havn't used normal stairs since I discovered that modular stairs could be used indoors like normal stairs. For some reason this wasn't obvious to me until I saw it done in on-line tutorials (sometime around getting TS2U).

Basically, altough they don't live in the closet they only visit it. The name "Vanishing Room/Closest/Shed" is actually a bit of a misnomer, if it were a normal dorm it is where they would go to vanish, except because the area is too small + you claimed the last door into the room they wont actually vanish and will instead immediately go do something else... hopefully constructive. Basically every so often they'll wander to the closet, step into it, then step back out. As if they needed to get something from it. Note: Sometimes it's hard to target the last myne door, try targetting from the inside of the room instead. Also if a new dormie moves in (ie an old one got.. misplaced), have one of your sims unclaim then reclaim the myne door. I just downloaded NoUniProtect, too. I wonder how long the dormies will last in the smaller dorm, without a cafeteria... Until you forget to feed them ... . Actually since there will only be 2-3 dormies they'll be easy to feed. I've kept a 10-bed dorm fed only serving a couple of meals a day (so some dormies would go hungry sometimes). Also, if you install a giant pineapple the juice will sustain them indefinitely.

I'm refining the vanishing room technique. By using moveobjects any number of Myne doors can be stacked in one location, creating a very discrete vanishing closet allowing an arbitrary number of dormies to live on the lot. This opens up new possibilities in dorm design. For best results claim the myne door last and (for Nightlife) use the most awesome No Uni Invulnerability For Dormies. This is an 8 bed boarding house using a vanishing closet hidden beneath the stairs. It's a 4 bedroom, 2 story house built on a 2x3 lot, with a driveway and car. Comes complete with a cafeteria worker and pretty much everything needed for skilling up and engaging in The Sport of Kings. Clicky the image to get it from the exchange. Sometimes you don't want a giant huge laggy dorm of doom. So this is a dorm built as a tiny 4 student flat on a 2x2 lot with fairly minimal stuff (definitely not a luxury dorm), designed for a couple with a few flatmates to help pay the expenses. Instead of a vanishing closet a vanishing garden shed is used. This flat doesn't have a cafeteria cook, remember to feed your dormies or they'll DIE. Unless of course you want them to die, you evil person you.

The big drawback, I'm finding is that when you start a new neighborhood, and your first Sim starts as a student, he's really poor. Sleeping in an empty lot with a piece of lawn furniture for a bed poor. It's an interesting challenge in its own way, but it means his plans for children, etc., are on hold for a long time.

This is where the Inventory helps. A student should earn something like at least 10K over their uni career, then all that crap can be lugged home in the inventory.

I decided to try playing a (vanishing room) dorm without the no-invulnerability hack, turns out the dormies don't need to sleep, they stay awake all the time... kind of creepy. So I have to say that using a vanishing room + invulnerable dormies is not much fun, unless you actually want them to stay awake all the time group researching and stuff. (I suppose automated study-buddies could be semi-useful )

got it now, Thank you edit - it has the phone hack and a "jackgnome" in it, no problem since I use clean installer but I thought I would warn you. I seem to be having trouble with stripping them out, I'm not in the habit of uploading lots but I thought the following procedure did the trick: Package lot. Install with clean installer, deselecting everything except lotsegment. Start game without any hacks loaded. Install the lot in a virgin neighbourhood. Repackage the lot, for upload this time. But it seems that the extra plugins stick around. Does my ignorance betray me or did the patch change something?

Well, I finally cracked this just before I posted a message saying it wasn't working. The stupid site covers the download link with an even stupider ad just before it changes to "Download Here". That ad reminds me of those flash games where the image and scream from exorcist randomly flashes up "halfway" through, except the ad is more obnoxious. Anyway, thanks for this and I still have one question: Do you play the dorm with this mod in, or do you not need the dormie mod with this dorm? I imagine the concept should work with any cofiguration of hacks. Dormies would just be more ADD without no-invulnerability.

Huh, I thought having a room with more than one Myne Door in a dorm was a bad thing. I seem to recall in the notes on creating dorms that you're not supposed to do it. I think it's "bad" in the same way as building a dorm without a cafeteria cook; the dormies will die if you don't make alternative arrangments. The main strangeness case would be like having two myne doors leading into one room, shared by a dorime and player sims, the room would fog out if the dormie picked the door last, and otherwise the dormie would act strangely. In short, it's not something that maxis has designed to work in a logical way (leaving the behaivour at "undefined"), but it DOES work in a constistent way that can be exploited for creative dorm designs. If it was designed to work in a logical way then it wouldn't work for the purposes I'm using it for.

It is actually possible to make a normal dorm where dormies act like normal sims.
Basically create a "vanishing room", a room where all myne doors lead into. Stick it off to the side somewhere (for space optimization you could wrap it around a corridor or something). Now, if one of *your* sims is the most recent to claim a myne door, then the vanishing room will be permamently visible, a dormie will step into it, immediately "wake up" due to it being lit, then step back out and resume acting like a normal sim. So basically other than taking a 1 minute trip to the vanishing room every day or so they act quite normally and will sleep in the beds and such. (If a dormie is the last to claim a myne door, the vanishing room will be fogged unless one of your sims steps into it, when that happens all the hibernating dormies will wake up and spew forth, it's quite entertaining).
So once you have a functioning vanishing room make proper dorm rooms with normal doors and beds, I usually have at least 2 beds per room, and sometimes create a big room with lots of beds, like for a really cheap hostel. If you go for 1 or 2 beds per room I imagine you could use APO to assign dormies their rooms.
Dormies actually take better care of themselves with the vanishing room configuration, it seems that normal sleep and having lots of hours a day to take care of needs works out better than the weird hibernation thing.
Maybe a hack could supress the dorm room fog thing so dormies are pemamently active?
