801  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Motoki Come Back on: 2005 December 07, 00:14:49
Quote
The one who attacked Motoki, and is very religious...

<curious> who did you feel attacked Motoki? The only personal attack I saw was by christianluv and it wasn't Motoki that was being attacked... There were a lot of opinions, even some offensive opinions, but I didn't see anything else that was purposefully or personally ...aggressive... maybe I missed something. As I had no intention of entering the debate, I wasn't reading that closely.

People are entitled to their opinions, and to express them, even if they're wrong ...*especially* if they're wrong, sos we get the chance to tell them so in a very authoritative tone which is undoubtedly going to make them change their minds <tongue firmly in cheek, of course>

Quote
The peculiar evil of silencing the expression of an opinion is, that it is robbing the human race; posterity as well as the existing generation; those who dissent from the opinion, still more than those who hold it.  If the opinion is right, they are deprived of the opportunity of exchanging error for truth:  if wrong, they lose, what is almost as great a benefit, the clearer perception and livelier impression of truth, produced by its collision with error.  ~John Stuart Mill, On Liberty, 1859

That said, freedom of expression is important but I'd rather Motoki wasn't hurt/unhappy (and see why he was) and hope his break is good but very very short. And the thread was off-topic - probably that kind of debate belongs somewhere else (RL or political forums or wherever is appropriate) so people that enjoy it can engage in it and those that don't can easily skip, sos I'm just as happy it moved.

<hopes no one takes this as some sort of endorsement on my part of said opinions or anything in any way against Motoki - it isn't.>
802  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: *sigh* I depise the Pleasure sims LTWs on: 2005 December 06, 00:38:44
Personally, the LTWs bore me - really the whole aspiration system bores me. I agree I'd *love* some different ones (and LTWvariety isn't giving me enough). But yeah, for the "dream dates" one - all the dates can be with the same person and after the first one it gets really easy to hit dream date. Certainly married people can date (um I mean together, not on the side). My daughter and her husband have regular date nights (and choose "date movies" and discuss what's a good "date restaurant" even) and I think it's cute :) My co-worker and her husband do this as well.

Ah, young love ;)

I thought the numbers were 25 (first dates) and 50 (dream dates), not 50 and 100... is that really right? <doesn't have anyone with those LTWs to look right now>

All the shareware I have encountered expects you to pay or delete after the trial period, even though not all shareware apps enforce this by disabling themselves.

The (original) idea of shareware is that you try the program and if you like it then you *voluntarily* make payment to the author, and pass it around to others who might also do so, eliminating the need for marketing and other commercial entities and allowing developers to cut out the middle men. The whole point is that it's an honor system payment. Crippleware - that is, stuff that disables itself after a certain period (demoware) or has disabled functions (you can do everything but save :p) - is a corruption of the concept, so much so that the term lost useage (and respect) in the late 80s and early 90s.

WinRAR (despite the nag) however is full-fledged shareware. The idea is that if you like something, you'll be willing to pay for it *because* you like it. If you don't feel it's worth the money, you don't pay for it. You're not doing something "wrong". If you wanted to support the programmer and get documentation and other things they'd made, you'd send them some money, yes? It's the same general concept as sims sites that allow free downloads but take donations for support. The originators of shareware actually requested "donations" even.

Some links:
 http://paulspicks.com/history.asp
http://www.answers.com/topic/shareware

I'm sure there are lots of other good ones. I didn't look very hard. The shareware concept has made millionaires out of people and some very good programming started that way.

I've seen lots of shareware apps that say things like "if you can afford it, send a couple of dollars - if you can't, don't worry about it." Some really good programs even - I used to love gifcreator. Oh and graphicconverter is still the best, most complete image formatting program I've ever seen. I was very pleased when they added it straight up to Mac's OSX (that one might actually be freeware. I don't remember). Anyway *lots* of good stuff. If you want to support the programmer (who, hopefully, is an individual and needs support) send them some money. If you don't, don't.

By the by, I don't like either winwar OR winzip. I use Stuffit Deluxe (paid for Smiley on my mac and it works lots lots better. I drag a huge selection, doubleclick and am done. Anything I can, I decompress on my mac before it ever goes to my pc, but I use the zip program that came on the pc (winzip I guess) and winrar for rar files (because MTS2 insists on putting them up) occasionally. I'm not sending them any money tho - I'm not interested in supporting them. If it was *good* it'd work as well as the mac does :p
804  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Identical siblings on: 2005 December 05, 04:38:47
I really think the "talk to baby" "rub belly" things give a +rel for the father with the baby. My most recently born ingame sim had a higher relationship with her father than her mother immediately after birth and the pluses show up over the father's head, but not the mother's.

Jeez, am I alone in this??? I don't mean to get all annoyed and stuff, but I resent the implication that I'm stealing.

You're not doing anything wrong. It's a shareware program - shareware means that people that can afford to, or feel they use a program enough to justify it, pay for it and others don't... more or less like donating if you want to support a site but you don't have to. The option to use it without paying is there for a reason. Some companies put out a smaller version of their full program as shareware - I use bbedit lite and have for years. If you don't need the options, you never need to buy the full program (but it still reminds you it exists as an option.) They get name recognition from you using it whether you pay for it or not. You might tell other people where to get it (rather than one with cute animal icons ;) and *those* people might buy the program. In any case, it's working as intended. Lots of standard programs people use today started out as freeware (no nags) or shareware, and the method has served the companies well.
806  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: "House of Fallen Trees" crashes my game on: 2005 December 03, 22:56:24
I'm glad it worked :) I sympathize with those that like a lot of light. Even tho I can't really run it on my computer, I do as well. I've been known to break an outside wall as I'd rather have the inside of the house sunlit that much. I'm that way in rl as well - I buy all very high-watt bulb things and take the shades off all the lights in the house. I want it bright :)

I wonder if I can set a file for that cheat that makes the inside of the house lit as much as sunlight without breaking a wall. I'll have to try it :)
807  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: "House of Fallen Trees" crashes my game on: 2005 December 03, 21:12:47
This is from MissDoh's post of Nightlife cheats on the AgeSimsCheat thread:

Quote
setLotLightingFile [filename]
Allows the player to create a new lighting file with specific lot lighting values.  Used to make special light settings per lot.

I haven't tried it myself, nor do I know how it works. I just remembered it when you said the lighting's weird in that house. I have to keep the lighting low anyway as my graphics card is terrible... but then maybe that would help my split level lot where the lower windows don't light up the bottom level enough to suit me. If you figure it out, let me know  Grin
808  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: "House of Fallen Trees" crashes my game on: 2005 December 03, 15:24:15
I haven't noticed the lighting (but I have to keep the lighting levels down anyway) but as NL came with a lot lighting levels cheat, I wonder if that's what they did to that lot. And maybe the same cheat would fix it up for you?

Thank you for taking the time to complete this survey.  Please write any additional comments you feel are applicable to the context of this survey below.

I decided to answer this as you have no other mac users. I would care about CD cases if they were equal to the album covers we used to get. Considering the amount of money that goes into making a CD compared to what went into albums, the labels are making a killing yet they spend all this time screaming. They can make a profit selling in China for $2 :p

Yeah, alcohol doesn't like me that well either.

I mean, I can drink socially and a lemon drop now and then is fun and all, but all those images of pouring alcohol in people's mouths only remind me of how deathly ill I would be. I've not got any fun drinking stories, only sickly ones. <shivers>

alcohol uses you?

grenadine is pomegranite juice :) pomegranites are wonderful things.

812  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Hi Everyone! and a question for NL patch on: 2005 December 01, 01:09:05
I have trouble getting the clickable neighbors button to click (took me awhile to figure out). You kinda have to click on the edge of it and mouse over it a bit to find the clickable spot. I can't remember if it looks grey or not, but I thought I didn't have that option at first.

I have a lousy card and can only invite 2 guests and don't get popups for the cute little scenes (and my water is grey, tho I'm not sure it's always been that way :p), but I have clickable neighbors. If just playing with it a bit doesn't work, I think I'd reinstall NL to get the original graphic rules file again <scuffle, sorry but it seems like it isn't reading it right> (maybe delete what's in there now so it'll pull it off the disk again) and then patch again. After you get it working, if you want to change the file after patching - seems like it might work better that way.

Oh, I prefer the shots (a) but will sometimes have 'em mixed (b) instead if I wanna be a bit more in control of my intake, kwim :)

Congratulations on the little one!  When's the young'un due to arrive?

I actually quite like virgin drinks as well, so if you don't wanna drink alone, I'll join you :)

If you're an UO fan, do you know Raph Koster (the head dragon or whatever the Ultima folk called him, we called him Ptah) then? I played (and "modded") on Legendmud which was where Raph was before he got eaten by the "they'll pay me" bug ;) Actually I remember one of his early interviews regarding how Legend (and muds) were set-up and how that would be incorporated into UO... might even have that saved around somewhere still. It's kinda neat to have been around at the beginning.

Not quite sure about walking; I think it involves a bit more parental involvement.

I'm not so sure. My grandson is at the "just ready to start crawling any day now" stage - which means he pushes up on his hands and knees and rocks back and forth. No one taught him that - it must be instictive. But what an odd thing to be instinct, isn't it?

All you people who are doing well with no study skills - have you reached college-level yet? Personally, I think it doesn't matter much if you study, until college (or even for the first couple of years at college-level, depending) but after that it does begin to be important and actually the brighter kids who never needed to do any work in high school have a harder time at that point.
817  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: So, I set up this website... on: 2005 November 30, 02:39:55
simmiecal, what program are you using? They're all a bit different.

Blue, I'll be happy to get a PM :) One thing about Dreamweaver - it's really set-up for professional website designers. Not to say you can't do it, but it's a bit confusing for someone that doesn't know anything about setting up a site (personally, I hate the site management tools and they force you to do that part first). That being the case, I suggest reading through a basic tutorial or two on html (which is really easy) just to give you a little bit of background.

The Macromedia Dreamweaver forum is here:
http://www.macromedia.com/cfusion/webforums/forum/index.cfm?forumid=12

It might help to look through other peoples questions (when I was learning Flash, I found a Flash site invaluable :)

There's a list of basic html guides here ("HTML for the Conceptually Challenged" looks pretty good.)

http://www.hwg.org/resources/?cid=26

The html writer's guild itself has a bunch of mailing lists that are nice to learn to do specific things, and their archives are available online (you don't have to join - although their front page is all about signing up).

And one more basic guide. I like this little page because it tells you how to write html in notepad :) (including properly saving the extension).
http://www.pageresource.com/html/getstart.htm

Hope that helps a bit.
818  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: So, I set up this website... on: 2005 November 30, 01:53:49
I've used Dreamweaver (under duress) and could answer specific questions if you have them.

The best way to start is probably to choose one of their template pages and use it to create a home page just to get your feet wet. Then you can little by little learn to add the pieces that you want. Do you have an idea of what you want your page to look like?
819  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: The Revenge of Blue, the Torment of Pescado... on: 2005 November 29, 03:59:16
Hey, what'cha change the name for? I liked it... I was just playing (if that's why...)

(Sometimes I get the idea I might think of something funny, but I do remember I've been informed that I have no sense of humor, so I'm not really surprised or hurt when it's just me that's amused ;)

823  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Will you morons just stay out of her coffin?? on: 2005 November 28, 22:08:40
Yes, well, that's not really how real vampires work at all. Real vampires are nothing so extreme, and don't sleep in coffins except maybe as a fetish thing. Some of us don't sleep at all. We all do hate sunlight, though, and drinking blood is a great way for us to fill our iron needs, not to mention quite tasty, but not strictly required.

oh, just another "wanna-bleh-bleh" Nowadays every guy with pale skin and a dark cape thinks he's a blood brother of the grand master. (to paraphrase a rather good show) :p

At least Thessaly knew what she was playing at, not that it really helped her overmuch.

824  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: POLL OF THE WEEK: Does BlueSoup Have A Fat Head on: 2005 November 28, 21:47:25
Your head is perfect. Fat is a comparative term - unless JM comes out of the dark ages and learns to take a digital pic, we have nothing to compare with except the rest of your body and in that case it's not the least bit fat. (Round is not a comparative term, it's a descriptive one and works perfectly - round rather than oval or heart-shaped.)

'Course I doubt there's anyone else here with green skin, not to mention that wart on the end of the nose, so you should all be counting your blessings anyways.
