126  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Talk me out of it, or convince me I am doing the right thing... on: 2006 August 02, 05:49:23
Copyright laws would still make it illegal to download a copy even though you purchased one, due to the fact that you only bought the license for that disk.  It's also illegal to install more than 1 copy with said disk.  However, supposedly you can't get in trouble for piracy if you don't distribute the product but the most common protocol for this, BitTorrent, makes you share the file.  Then again, you've only heard of pirates getting busted for actually selling pirated copies so you're probably in the clear as long as the ESA doesn't decide to be like the RIAA/MPAA.

I'm wondering how many of those features are in OFB, but everyone's just been slient about getting them.  I know the Attraction system was transferred, but I'm not sure what else was.  If you have a decent computer, being able to see bordering lots makes it quite a bit more realistic than being in the middle of nowhere.

EDIT:Post 300!  It seems that I've got another set of ripped lips, but I'm not sure I actually needed them.  What's the next milestone, 1000?

Just like Hot Date was the best expansion for TS1 due to the fact that it introduced community lots and LTR?  I believe that the engine upgrades from University were included in the expansions after it even though you didn't need them.  Of course, you probably couldn't get the 2 extra wants and jobs without Uni though.

Nightlife was an appendix, it wasn't really needed due to the fact we already had Downtown lots.  It did add a "family style" implementation of HD's dining and an incredibly easy dating system though.

If you're deciding on buying Pets, then getting OFB's a no-brainer since it adds things that are actually useful to your "human" sims.  Despite it being only 1 disc, it's got as much content as NL but unfortunately it's lacking in objects.  I actually had no interest in this expansion until I got it, but now I tend to use OFB's features every time I play.
129  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Another shameless Ubuntu plug on: 2006 August 02, 00:33:38
When I used Opera 9 in Linux, when I scrolled down it made the text much harder to read, as if someone ripped a part of a letter and shifted it up.  This didn't happen with Seamonkey or Konqueror.  Also, in the last hour that I tried OpenSUSE, the Install/Uninstall Software text seemed to be ripped too.

I'm using a large amount of Intel parts in my laptop and I'm damn sure that it's similar to what quite a few newer laptops have too.  *buntu can't even get the god damn settings right on the LiveCD, and try to trick me that it's using the right settings by saying it's "1280x800" when I actually installed it.  I doubt EasyUbuntu or Automatix would have fixed anything nor did I even know about these when I installed 6.06.  These are things people need to freaking know without going to Ubuntu's forums.

Is Adobe crap just because Photoshop and Flash isn't supported?
130  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Another shameless Ubuntu plug on: 2006 August 01, 21:44:48
Wine and Cedega won't run TS2 since neither of them can emulate DirectX 9.0c yet or something like that.

One of the few reasons I'm not switching to Linux is that there's No Adobe Support, Shoddy Opera Support, "Ripping" of text, poor hardware support(Ubuntu can't detect the GMA950 correctly), among other things.  In addition, the only version of Linux that accepted my graphics chip correctly was OpenSUSE and possibly Fedora.  Kubuntu looked all stretched even though it siad 1280x800 in the configuration file.

I prefer KDE applications, and that is a reason why I'm not even considering Ubuntu.  Besides, it might work just as poorly as Kubuntu.
131  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Fast and fatal? on: 2006 July 31, 22:36:25
I haven't used this in debug recently, but I believe there's an option when you SHIFT+Click that is Kill.../By Flies or something similar.  Rodney's Death Creator is the quickest method for the other deaths though.
132  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Rant - The ways in which the sims community is completely insane. on: 2006 July 31, 19:21:34
I'm going to use P2P networks as a basis for this statement, but downloading without redistributing is perfectly legal.  Many files using the BitTorrent protocol would be illegal to download though, since while you're downloading you're sharing parts of the file.  Same goes for Gnutella, but it doesn't seem to share as much from the swarm as BT.

Making derivative works isn't illegal in most cases, such as making a mesh that looks like a Porsche or something.  Satires are also legal.  The double standard in this community, not being able to make derivative works of derivative works, is quite baffling.  I'll be glad when this community crumbles under its own greed, but that won't happen for a while yet.
133  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Sims 1 Mods? Are they still around? on: 2006 July 30, 21:11:21
If I recall, 8th Deadly Sim was the pay 7th Deadly Sims site but I've heard there's some really good content there.  Heck, many of my downloads for TS1 were from 7DS but their dressers were based on the old pre-HD style so you had to click "Change Clothes" on the thing until you got what you wanted.

I used to have a TS1 site also, but there wasn't all that much there except for an Anti-Abduction telescope and usable SS clothing.
134  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Sims 1 Mods? Are they still around? on: 2006 July 30, 03:53:59
Simslice has some fixes for the "Gorilla" walk, community lot skilling, more visitors on community lots, object placement upgrades, and other things.  I found these things vital to playing TS1, especially an increase in the visitors on community lots.  There's also some objects but he's moved most of them to the pay section.
135  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Another shameless Ubuntu plug on: 2006 July 28, 05:24:59
I tried out the latest Opera and it's overrated IMHO.
I tried out Firefox, and it's much more overrated IMHO.  It doesn't pass Acid2, Firefox 3 no longer supports 95/98, and is generally slower than Seamonkey.

OpenSUSE worked better, but I still had too many problems with it.  I only got Seamonkey and Opera to install on it, and when I tried to install "critical" updates it wouldn't install them.  It took several tries to get rid of FF and OpenOffice.  It also wouldn't install simple things, like Wine and KOffice either.  I do have to give it credit though, it got farther than Kubuntu.  However, I haven't had a Windows XP program fail to install in a long time.

Then again, maybe Linux just hates me.  I can never seem to get into the console because it won't let me enter a password, and those two distros just won't let me install stuff on them.
136  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Another shameless Ubuntu plug on: 2006 July 28, 01:00:30
Ubuntu actually works?  When I installed Kubuntu, I couldn't even get Opera to install.  OpenSUSE worked a whole lot better.

I have a feeling that Pescado killed someone since Dizzy came back.
137  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: interminable pregnancy on: 2006 July 24, 20:25:01
Have you been dabbling in the non-awesome again?

Anyway, I wonder if forcing an error on the Pregnancy Controller using the FFS Debugger would have done the exact same thing.  You can't force an error on it directly, but I believe it's an offworld object so you can do "Force Error -> Offworld" or "Force Error -> All" with the debugger.
138  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Rant - The ways in which the sims community is completely insane. on: 2006 July 23, 19:27:33
Most people don't even care enough to get a Creative Commons license, sadly the only reason that "theft" is an issue is because someone believes they actually own a recolor.

I believe someone commented in that thread that "people don't realize that if creators don't get credit, they'll stop making stuff."  That's pure BS, do you know which factory/sweatshop worker made your clothing?  No, you only know the Brand name.  The Sims 2 Custom Content is your brand name.

I wonder if people would support a movement to allow distribution and recolors of their work as long as they're given credit.  I highly doubt it, since people are still hoping to become famous since they can do something in Photoshop.

Cloning someone elses object without their permission and using it for your own is..THEFT!
Personally, I really don't see why someone would be stupid enough to recolor something without permission and submit it to MTS2.  This is the only case of actual theft listed there.

Quote from: LyricLee
Using 3d models from web sites and converting them without permission is..THEFT!
That's about half the 3d models on the site then, and they're public domain.  Essentially, you could use that stuff for anything including putting it in TS2.  Maybe this isn't so bad if they enforce it, the high poly stuff comes from Public Domain Meshes.

Quote from: LyricLee
Using someones custom content in your lots, on sims, or modifying their content without permission is...THEFT!
Lots should be cleaned of all CC anyway.  I don't get this rule with sims, since Sims2Pack files send all the CC with it anyway.  If Sims are just combinations of CC, what's the point of their submission if you can't get the CC with them?  As for modifying content w/o permission, Gunmod's Radiance Lighting mod would be dead along with a few other projects.

Using someones alphas and/or textures without permission is... you guess it...THEFT!
If they're recolored Maxian Textures, why can't someone just recolor it and distribute it again?  If they weren't planning on making a recolor for something, and made it CEP compatible then why can't you publish it?  Even if you did get permission from the author, it would still be thievery because it would be harder to prove it.

Speaking of Content theft, sims in LyricLee's avatar have custom content.  Did she get permission to repost that custom content?  I doubt it.
140  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Request - hack so townies keep everything they buy? on: 2006 July 19, 20:24:55
Of course, then you get the townie that comes with an inventory full of Eau de Brynne, which, in order to be rid of, must be actually placed and then mopped. Tongue
Wait, puddles are sellable?

Speaking of this, do townie funds go down when townies buy something from a business?  Or are they just a bottomless pool of cash?
141  TS2: Burnination / Oops! You Broke It! / SuSe Annoyances and Linux in Sims 2 on: 2006 July 18, 03:17:40
I recently installed SuSe 10.1 on my laptop, and I'm quite impressed with it since it wasn't all stretched out like Kubuntu.  I don't stand how people can stand using that form of Linux.  Anyway, I've encountered a few annoyances with it I want to see if anyone knows the solutions to.

1)I'm an avid Opera user, but I just can't use it with SuSe.  Unlike in Kubuntu it actually installed, but the text constantly tears.  Is there any way around this issue, or am I going to have to keep using Mozilla Seamonkey?

2)I still can't access the console, it asks for a Username and Password but when I enter in a username it's impossible to enter in a password.  It's not that big of a deal since you don't need administrative access to change anything, but it's a problem that's persisted against me throughout all the Linux distributions I installed.

3)Every so often when I use the touchpad with a web browser, it tends to activate a "Mouse Gesture" that sends it back through the history a few pages.  This problem happens the most with Opera for some reason.

4)What's up with the Updater not installing correctly most of the time, and the Installer not being able to install stuff through the interweb?

Finally, I have a question about TS2's Compatibility with Linux.  I know TS1 runs fine with both WINE and Cedega, and in Cedega 4 there were still problems (Mostly with Cedega not supporting Dx 9.0c) but now since Cedega 5 exists have they fixed it?
142  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Rant - The ways in which the sims community is completely insane. on: 2006 July 17, 02:42:10
If Maxis was as secretive of their content as that guy, then we'd have TS1's Hacker Witch Hunt again.  People then complain when something can't be altered, and the fact that they should alter it.

I highly doubt his hairs were made from scratch either, they probably had a Maxian base of some sort.  Of course they EA take any action against this thievery, since the community would think they are "evil" and would stop buying their games.
143  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Rant - The ways in which the sims community is completely insane. on: 2006 July 16, 03:45:33
You know where EA got the idea for Stuff Packs?  Paysites.  Yep, because you thought it was OK to give random people your money for objects you now pay EA for objects which should have came in an expansion.

Bah, there's nothing worth downloading on Paysites anyway.  Besides, there's a way to get into TSR and MTS2 using a free service that is used to bypass New York Times Registration.
144  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Rant - The ways in which the sims community is completely insane. on: 2006 July 15, 03:27:57
If these people cared so much about protecting their content, then why didn't they file for a Creative Commons license rather than just saying "Oh, you can't redistribute this".  Not to mention that these same people probably infringe on copyrights by posting screenshots from games, copyrighted materials in avatars, etc.  They only give a damn if it would prevent them from becoming "famous".

Besides, I'm not sure those Paysites are entirely legal anyway since they're selling copyrighted Maxian work.
145  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: super-speed when Servo "powers down" on: 2006 July 14, 06:38:50
~ - Pause
1 - Normal Speed
2 - Super Speed
3 - Ultra Speed

I tend to use 1 when I need to give unimportant orders, ~ for important ones.  I tend to not use the queue.  3 when I have sims skilling or anything else that doesn't require me to give constant orders.  I tend to slow it down to 1 before they go to work or sleep, since that Ultra Speed seems to be faster than 3.  It might just be a placebo effect, I dunno.  I use 2 where 3 would be too fast.
146  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: EA it is time to stop being stupid and start talking. A Rant by Twain. on: 2006 July 10, 20:06:05
Since E3 they haven't released any more screenshots of pets, so I'm thinking those pets were prerendered or photoshopped in there.  The Glamour Stuff Pack, however has screenshots of its content.  In Short, Pets is vaporware but Glamour Stuff isn't.

Here's the thing, EA's not going to change how they deal with TS2 if people keep buying expansions.  The Family Fun Stuff pack sold too well, it was on one of the top sellers list for a week or so.  Why the heck should they change what's working so far?  Loads of people that complain about it will buy the expansion anyway.
147  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Proposal Mood Requirements? on: 2006 July 08, 06:12:02
I believe they set Pleasure sims to live for the moment.  Essentially, it's the Slacker Aspiration that about 5 people requested.  Oh yeah, and the fact that it sort of promoted Nightlife could have something to do with its introduction.

It would be interesting if the percentages for acceptance could be altered for the aspiration, for example Family Sims will accept 100% of the time, Romance Sims will accept 25% at the time, Knowledge Sims are 50% plus skill points (Probably about 1% each point or something), Fortune Sims will not accept a proposal from poor sims, Pleasure Sims accept 75% plus 1% for each dream date with said sim, Popularity accepts 75% plus 3% for every friend the proposee has.  I doubt it's even possible, and people would just complain that they can't get a proposition to work.

149  TS2: Burnination / Oops! You Broke It! / Minor Annoyance with new Driver on: 2006 July 07, 20:47:49

This message has been popping up every time I start the computer ever since I installed the 91.31 nVidia drivers.  I know I don't have a second card.  Is there a way to disable this or is this an advertisement for me to get another Geforce card?
150  TS2: Burnination / The Podium / Re: Proposal Mood Requirements? on: 2006 July 06, 02:40:30
It doesn't take much longer to get 100/100 after you get the engagement option, and even at less than 100 LTR they still accept often.  It doesn't make any sense that a sim that doesn't want to get married will accept a Proposal no matter what.
