Title: BV problem - That hood's not supposed to be there!
Post by: Ness on 2007 September 07, 00:56:58
One little glitch I'm finding with my shiny new BV install.

I found when I loaded for the first time I had the usual hoods - the seasons one, plus the three maxis ones.  But, I also have one labelled "weather", which can't be entered and can't be deleted as it crashes the whole application.   :(

Any ideas on why I have this and nobody else has reported it?  Could it be something to do with the fact that my program files folder is still set up with empty templates?

Any ideas on how to fix the damn thing?

This happened to me (before BV). I figured out it was because I had put one of the empty templates in the wrong place. The various directories and shuffling stuff around can get confusing.

I thought you were supposed to remove empty templates and replace with the originals before installing either a patch or a new EP.

I've managed to get rid of my stray hood - I had a G002 file hanging around in the G001 directory.  Removing that seems to have fixed it.

Unfortunately I can't find the non-empty templates on my computer - and I'm not really in the mood for a complete uninstall/reinstall.

Which ones do you need?  I have all the default Maxis ones backed up and can upload them for you.

That would be pretty much all of them.  Base game right through to seasons  :-\

Shall I PM you my email address?

You wouldn't have to do a complete reinstall.  You should be able to get original templates for your discs.  Just put the disc from the EP that you need the template from, and look for that .zip file.  I forgets what it's called now... compressed.zip or something like that, but if you search in that file, it should have all the original stuff.  Just copy and paste. :)

Ness, once you sort it all out and put your empty templates back, don't forget to zip up the originals and leaved the zips in situ, then it's easy to find them when you need them again.  ;)

Ok, Flare storm, looks like it's going to be quicker if I go raiding my CDs and fixing it that way, thanks for the offer.

:-\  Disc raiding and zipping will commence shortly...  I hope my other problems aren't the results of me being disorganised and stupid.

Well, we all have our off-days...and I'll bet you were just in such a hurry to install BV!  Mine may get here tomorrow if I'm lucky!

Ness, I think you need Mrs. Crumplebottom's handbag! ;D

You just ignore the static, ZZ.  Pay it no attention at all.

Call it a moment of insanity - but I elected to go the uninstall/reinstall route.  All 18 freaking disks!  Only got two stuff packs on torrents, so technically there's 20 disks of stuff so far...  crazy!

::)  And I kinda thought it would be fun to count how many disk changes were needed...

When my original Sims2 discs were temporarily lost, I went out and got the dvd.  Since I also have Pets on dvd, and now (it arrived this morning!  well done Amazon UK, as I only ordered it two days ago) BV on dvd, I think my reinstall was a lot less cumbersome, plus only the holiday stuff pack!

I still think you need the handbag.......

DVDs would be helpful...  if my computer had a DVD drive. :(

I got to 21 disk changes with base game and EPs only - no stuff packs yet.

Well. we can't get cd's over here now, except, I think for stuff packs.  Presumably the shipping cost of packs with only 1 dvd instead of 2 cds is cheaper - or the powers that be just think everyone in Europe is able to afford to upgrade whenever necessary!  Anyway, that's why I got caught up with using the Link, but now I have a dvd drive in the main computer, that's going to be a thing of the past!  DVDs are a godsend, though, when you have to do a complete reinstall, and I've done quite a few in the past 12 months....

I am posting this here because it's semi-related in that it is a hood issue caused by BV. I am not terribly concerned by it, but I thought it would be worth reporting because it's just weird. I renamed my TS2 folder and installed. A new TS2 folder was created. I looked in the new TS2 folder and instead of N001 I had N001 -bak. I've never seen a new EP install spawn a -bak hood. Obviously all I have to do is rename the folder to N001, but I thought that it was strange. Not that I was going to keep that version anyway, I just yanked all of the respawned Maxoid hoods and put my saved copies from my renamed TS2 folder in a few minutes ago. I guess I am just a curious person. Has anyone seen or heard of this happening before?

If it were all the hoods, I'd say it was just the way the game sets about finding the originals, but since it's only one, it's definitely odd.  Have you searched your computer for any other N001.bak file that SimPE, for example, might have created?

No, I haven't run simPE since BEFORE I yanked my old sims 2 folder out of my documents/ea games. There is no possible way that simPE could have done this. When I installed BV it created a new folder there (which is supposed to happen) with the default Maxis hoods (Strangetown, Riverblossom Hills, Veronaville, and Pleasantview). The first three had normal folders, Pleasantview had N001-bak, so of course it didn't show up in the select neighborhood menu (also normal). It seems that the BV install itself created the N001-bak folder instead of a N001 folder. But it doesn't seem like that has happened to anyone else with BV. No matter, it was an easy fix.

Maybe it did happen to others and they just didn't post about it - I can't see that you would be the only one affected.  Odd, though.  I'll have to see what happens when I install my copy - but I haven't got up the enthusiasm yet.

My oddness came about from leaving a file in the program files area that didn't belong.  It seems that when it regenerated the my documents stuff, it's copied over everything that's there, whether it's expected to be there or not.  Perhaps you have a N001-bak in your program files area for some reason?

I'll be careful to remove my simpe backups when I install. ;D
