Title: Reactions to noises
Post by: Nauthiz on 2007 February 10, 15:20:42
Just a random minor complaint.  :P

If an infant cries when lying in a crib, it wakes everyone in the room - that's ok. When someone holds it and it cries, other Sims sleep peacefully. But when someone starts to talk to the baby, others instantly wake up...

Babies and other Sims can't sleep with television or stereo on. A womrat in cage also wakes up everybody (unless you get Caged Pet Fixes by TJ), but a large dog barking does not. Ok, that would be annoying, but at least realistic.

I'm noticing those things from time to time and I wonder if there's a fix somewhere...

The fix is rug dividers. These make the sections into different rooms, but Sims just step over them.

Squinge at InSim has a global mod that allows sims to sleep through noises.

I tried using those once, and my nanny got stuck in the kitchen when her nannymobile came.  Acted as if she was in a room with no walls.  I had to kill one of the divider sections to get her out.

That was before my computer started whining about "No Directx9-compatible device drivers," after I upgraded the fsking video card.

That sounds like the TS2 version of the "stuck in a glass box" mime impression.

Rug dividers?

Rug dividers are the new low fences that came with Pets. They will cut any section off as a separate room, but Sims (and Pets) just walk over them. You could thus put a crib in the master bedroom, surround it with rug dividers, and the baby's cries won't wake the parents up.

Since it is a fence/wall thing, you must keep in mind many objects require a free space in front of them to work. The game will allow you to place a rug divider directly in front of a fridge or stove, rendering these objects useless.

Genius! I was wondering what the hell those things were.

I just thought they were more flowerbed borders. Perhaps it pays to read the descriptions.

Prepare to be bewildered by bizarre routing problems of all kinds if you use those, however.  >:(

Flowerborders works the same way, if you have no Pets. They can be useful for fake shower boxes or toilets with privacy, though.

dizzy: yeah, since cordoned off sections are seen as different rooms you can get the situation where a Sim will use a weird path... I sectioned off a part of the living room in one of my lots, and this caused Sims to go upstairs, throught the landing to the back of the lot, and downstairs again, and then track back. Pretty bewildering the first time I saw it.
It can come in handy when you section off a kitchen with half walls though: just stick the rug divider in the opening (since there are no half doors and fence doors look crappy), and the room will be treated as a closed space, not as part of the surrounding room (thus Sims will use tables in the kitchen, and not trek all the way to the living room sofa to eat).
