Title: Two Basic Questions
Post by: Darkstormyeve on 2005 September 13, 10:44:53
Q1. When looking in my downloads folder I see lots of files with just weird numbers and letters in their title. No 'words' at all. Can these be deleted?

Q2. Can I put all my downloaded clothes and genetics into my 'Saved Sims' folder?

Thankyou
Stormy.

Q1: No - but you can delete all the empty files, or red-marked files, using the Clean Installer. With the Clean Installer, scanning the Downloads folder, you will see the description of all these "long numbers", and only then you have to decide if delete them or not.

Q2:  I don't think so. But you can make a sub-folder in the Downloads folder, named Clothes, and put all the clothes there. I tried to do that, but sometimes the clothes didn't appear in the inventory - be aware of that.

Pescado says these files with funny numbers should be deleted on sight.  These are usually hacks that get installed when packaged with lots from the Exchange.  Read his post here: http://www.moreawesomethanyou.com/smf/index.php?topic=8.msg918#msg918, as well as the other posts in this thread.

Clothes and genetics can be placed in Saved sims.  They won't work in subfolders.  Hacks and mods can be placed in subfolders.

No, Pescado says that if they show up as hacks (red in S2PCI) and have no name they should be deleted on sight.  If they aren't red they could be almost anything, clothes, eyes, skintone, etc.  Stormy, I already replied to your post at VS, but I'll say it again here.

short answer is maybe and yes :P

Those files with an alphanumeric code are files that have been imported with lots, the only way to find out what they are and if you want to delete them is by looking at the file with something like SimPE or S2PCI.

And yes, you can put all bodyshop downloads in the saved sims folder, that's where all mine are, as long as they aren't in a sub folder of the saved sims folder.

Thanks everyone. I posted at VS too as it was 22:00 when I was sorting my downloads folder and getting tired so I needed an answer asap. I decided to delete to those mystery files as I sort of agreed with JMP's post about if it don't show a name, you don't want it. Ended up having 57meg of these files so they weren't empty but I will run my game tonight and see if it explodes.

I doubt it will explode, but you may find a few bald, eyebrowless Sims, or some who are suddenly wearing the most hideous Maxis outfit ever...

Ok. I loaded my game last night after deleting all the weird gobblyggok files from my downloads and figured I maight was well state for happened for the record.

I did run clean installer and it didn't pick up these weird files.

When I ran my game, all my genetics and object downloads were fine but alot of my houses were missing their floor and wall coverings. Plus two of my downloaded houses, well their lot was flashing blue. Trees and everything were fine, but were grass should be or dirt, it was flashing blue. Happened in two house, this flashing, but my other exchange lots were fine.

Sure enough I checked my wall and floors categories and 90% of my downloaded ones were missing. Bugger. So I recovered the deleted files from my bin and even though those weird files were back in my downloads folder, my missing wall and floors were not. Not happy.

So, does anyone know some good carpet sites to download from because I can't remember them now!

That is a great list and there are even a couple that I've never seen before, damn you - I'd just convinced myself that I had everything I needed in the 3+gig of downloads I already had. :'( heh heh
