Title: Any demand/desire of sc4.terrains?
Post by: gethane on 2006 February 23, 06:42:51
I have two I made that I like pretty well. If anyone is interested in either of these lovely landmasses, let me know, I'll zip them up with correctly titled pics and link them.

Those are nice. I've downloaded them both - even though I have SC4 trying to make a terrain I like with it gives me headaches, so I really appreciate it when someone shares a good one they've made. Thank you for sharing!

Yahoo! *downloads second one*

I refuse to buy SC4 just so I can attempt to make new neighborhood terrains for TS2!  It's bad enough that I bought SC3(unlimited) since I still haven't played it and I bought it when I bought TS2  ::)

I seem to have a short attention span and have almost a dozen custom neighbourhoods, so I'm always on the lookout for new terrains, these look great, so thanks :)

Those are great.  I bought SC4 to make my own terrains but I keep playing the dang game instead, who would of thought, lol.

I grabbed Harbor Valley... could you make one that has a railroad running down the center/off center?  Not a real one of course.. unless your game has'em.  I want to do a "wrong side of the tracks" scenario :D

Anything that looks close enough.. even a river .. would work.  That way it's easier for me to remember where to place the icky housing vs the McMansions <g>

here's one I already had done with a river. I'll fire up sc4 and see what other options there may be.

Thank you!

gethane, I downloaded your lovely Harbor Springs, and the neighbourhood picture shows up as a green & white grid.  How do I fix that so it shows properly?

I just asked Pescado, and he said in order to get a new screenshot for it, you have to take one and paste it into the PNG file.

Title: Re: Any demand/desire of sc4.terrains?
Post by: gethane on 2006 February 27, 16:03:12
Ahh, I'm sorry. I ASSumed :) everyone here knew how to get a Neighborhood pic up. My bad.

I can't really include one named properly for people's neighborhoods because it all depends on what number your neighborhood turns out to be (N004 etc).

Refer to this picture:

http://prismbaby.com/sims/neighborhood_preview_picture.jpg

You can either open up the sc4 terrain .jpg file in a program that will be able to rename it as a png (you could open the picture then choose Save As. Under the "save as type" box choose Portable Network Graphics (*.png), browse to the correct custom neighborhood, click on the N00*_Neighborhood.png, and save, choosing to overwrite the picture there.

Or you can take your own picture of the neighborhood, like I have in the above screen shot showing the thumbnail of my pic. I took one from closer to the ground. Open that picture, either a screen shot, or using the C picture capture from within the game. Resize it to 400 x 300. Then name it the same way I described above.

If you need more help, I'll be happy to try and explain better. If you don't have image software capable of renaming something to a .png format, let me know and I'll upload pics of each neighborhood in .png format that you can rename to your N00*_Neighborhood.png pictures.

Thanks gethane, I can rename the .jpg file no problem, and I much prefer that to taking a new picture.  :)

I have been wanting to test some things about the terrains- what I would like to see is a SC4 terrain with a bunch of islands that are very low in the water, just barely above sea level.

I would also need a somewhat larger, main island, with an area that has a straight road and terrain that slopes down away from it , preferably at a couple of different angles, like 30, 45, and and 60 degrees. If you could make something like that, it would be really awesome.

Is this something along the lines of what you are thinking of? Should I continue? Or am I not "getting" what you have in your head?

Great idea to offer Sc4 terrains here.

I will download all 4 of them as soon as I come back home.

I would love a small one, with water on left side and front of the screen, bit of hills but only on one side, rest should be mostly flat, can you do that for me?  I have SimCity but I am no good at making those custom hood with it.

Title: Re: Any demand/desire of sc4.terrains?
Post by: Ellatrue on 2006 February 27, 23:52:34
So far it is looking good, although it would depend on where you place the roads. I need to be able to place some homes as close to the water level as possible on the islands to experiment with some of the changes in coastal terrains, as well as a sloped area to create some of the lots which I will later move to the islands.

Title: Re: Any demand/desire of sc4.terrains?
Post by: gethane on 2006 February 28, 05:51:38
ah hah! i now know how it is you do make it so the picture is automatically generated for the neighborhood once its created. I'll be sure to do this for all future terrains, and I will put up new zipped packages for my other terrains when I get around to it this week (and will edit the OP to reflect that.)

I can't believe I'd never seen that before!

Thanks again for all the interest! I'm slowly working on the requests from Ellatrue and MissDoh. It usually takes me a few days to a week to fiddle with a terrain until I think it looks right and complete.

Title: Re: Any demand/desire of sc4.terrains?
Post by: MissDoh on 2006 February 28, 15:22:19
Thanks Gethane, take all the time you need for mine, it is not urgent.

Feel free to add a bit of decoration if you feel like it (no waterfalls though, it makes my computer lag) like boats we have in Pleasantview and a few trees, well whatever you think that would look nice but not to the point it would take 10 mins to load.  But you don't have too if you don't want or have the time to add that.

they aren't hoods, they are just terrains for hoods. gethane posted them so we could use them for our hoods if we wanted.

I would say if you want to use it for a hood you are going to make available for others then giving gethane credit for the terrain would be a good idea.

 :)

excellent description. and feel free to use them for whatever. I've noticed in my searches for interesting terrains, there just aren't that many out there.  So I like making them. Heh, for one thing, I only need one hand and can stop whenever I need to. I have a 2 year old and an 8 week old (and 3 preteen/teens) so I get distracted a lot and only really get to really play the sims a couple times a week.

Putting these terrains in your SC4Terrains folder simply makes them available to use to generate a neighborhood for yourself. They won't have any decoration etc. Once you use these to generate a neighborhood, they become MUCH MUCH bigger.

An sc4.terrain itself is about 200-250 kb. A fresh neighborhood is much bigger. THough if you delete all characters, it brings the size down a lot.

Pictures are included so you don't have to make them.

I edited my OP to include another terrain I'd been working on, Blackrock Bluffs. All pictures should now be included. Hopefully it works, was my first time doing that.

Having some trouble with the island map. Did you want bridges connecting the island? You don't have to have them, except for realism sake.

Not sure if you're having the same problems I had, but I wanted low lying land - beach level land on the island. If the land is too low for Simcity's liking, it won't build the bridge. You have to build up the land a little bit around the base of the bridge in order to place one - which sort of defeats the look I was going for. If you find a way around that, please share.

Title: Re: Any demand/desire of sc4.terrains?
Post by: gethane on 2006 March 02, 13:48:07
yeah, that was definitely a problem. It won't just build a bridge laying flat on the water, like the lowest level of land.

Thanks for the input! And no, haven't found a way around it :(

The blackrock one you made suits me fine, it looks like what I requested for.  ;D

The bridge is ok with me but you can take it out if you wish if you are not satisfy with the result.  I will definitely download this one tonight.

Did you updated the others and add all the pictures needed?

EDIT:  Meaning the lush, desert etc. like you did for the Blackrock one?

There are a couple that I would love to have.

1.  A copy of the neighborhood from TS1.   I can remember seeing one somewhere but it was a pay site.

2.  A really big neighborhood with lots of streets, room for a couple of hundred lots.  Very little water or mountains, but not entirely flat.  Rolling terrain with some low hills along one or two edges sloping down to low ground on the opposite sides.

Those would be really appreciated.  I got your others above but I have a lot of custom hoods

By the way,  does anyone know what would happen if you deleted the terrain that one of your hoods was using? I have some I have used that are really crappy but they were the best I could find at the time and got tired of using Pleasantview over and over. (I consider Strangetown and Veronaville to be pretty crappy too.  Not enough room for lots.)

I'd like a SA4 terrain that has lots of beach front locations for beachbum housing and resort locations.  It can be a irregular coast with sandy inlets.  Some streets can be close together and others spread out for pallatzos. (Ritzy places)

Title: Re: Any demand/desire of sc4.terrains?
Post by: gethane on 2006 March 23, 04:15:39
Added an island terrain to the OP.

The center island is hilly, the outlying ones less so.

THe bridges just weren't working for me, for multiple reasons.

This probably isn't a terrain I'd play on, but perhaps someone likes these sorts of things.

After installation of OFB, its tougher to get low lying areas it seems. In another terrain I've been working on, when I transfer it into Sims 2, the low lying areas sometimes become scattered water. Imagine some dough you are forming and stretching into a pizza crust and it starts tearing in the thin spots.

I was having a problem with low land as well - had to give up the hood I was getting so frustrated. Be careful with low land - even if it shows ok, as soon as you add a lot with a basement or pond, it sinks the land all around it and you get flooded basements and the terrain around the house (like the road) gets flooded. I had wanted some nice gentle sloping beachfront land - not cliffs - and just couldn't get it to work.

If you're still so gracously taking requests, could I put in for a couple smaller terrains with quite a few streets?  I'm not too keen on sprawling suburban--or even sprawling urban centers...  I'd like to make my own sub-hoods, but the terrains are all too big for my taste.  And seeng as my copy of SC4 is ruined, I can't make them myself.  It's not a demand, just a request... feel free to ignore.

I think it depends on how much lower the far edge of the lot is from street level. I am actually hoping to use this on purpose, as I have been making a bunch of beach houses and such on stilts for it. That's why I requested the neighborhood. (Thanks gethane!)

Haven't had the experience with basements or ponds yet, but it's pretty much unsafe to have a lot with any part of the structure below sea level. Kind of makes sense though, if you think about it.
