Title: Will a U.S. base game (and Uni) play nicely with Korean expansion packs?
Post by: miaokitty on 2006 February 15, 08:53:56
So apparently South Korea is the one place harder to ship to than a bunker... no retailer that I can find will ship Nightlife (or any game for that matter) to me, and I'm reluctant to befriend GIs for the sole purpose of shopping on the base.  Meanwhile, copies of "The Sims 2 화려한 외촐" are calling out to me!  Does anyone have any idea what will happen if I install that on top of my current setup (base game + Uni)?  Will my whole game turn Korean?  BFBVS? nothing?

Thanks!
Kitty

Your entire game will probably turn Korean, rendering most of your stuff illegible. Although it might ask you what you want to install in, and if you choose English, you might be fine. I wouldn't suggest playing it after that, otherwise.

However, you can convert it back to one of the two flavors of Engrish easily enough via a registry patch. If you attempt to play your neighborhood while the game is still in Korean, you may damage your neighborhood.

Are you checking net retailers who aren't US based?  You could, for example, try Amazon.co.uk instead of Amazon.com.  Or maybe a store based in Australia?

There is a problem for US retailers because of the Security laws which prevent exporting Hi-tech (including computer) information to certain countries - and pc games seem to fall within the scope of these laws!

You may or may not have a problem. As Pescado said, it may render the game text in Korean, but I can say that that will happen only if there is no English install option. I have the US base game myself but the Finnish version expansions, and I was able to install in UK English. I can't remember what all language options I had, but there were quite a pile.

And yeah, there's always that registry patch.

No, that's the other Korea.  :D  Seriously, while I'm sure that's part of it, it's actually amazingly difficult to get anything that's not a book/CD/DVD shipped here from anywhere, no matter how small or light.  I guess it's not worth the hassle for the store.  This registry patch sounds promising if English isn't automatically available.  Would it be a an actual downloadable patch or just a matter of manually changing a few values?

I've heard of people living in all kinds of places being unable to import technology (ie the sims) because of the US restrictions.  (I'm well aware that south and North Korea are not the same!)

dunno. It must mean something.  Probably a code of some kind.  For, as we all know, JM does not make typos.  That's why he can point and laugh at people who make typos. :P

Oh, but he does make typos.  It's just most people don't notice or are too scared to point and laugh at him.  Not me, though. I'll point and laugh when I can.  ;D

Right.  That site is chock-full of secret subliminal messages.  Good job on decoding JM's message Watson!

I know, that was just my lame attempt at humor, sorry.   :)  Though it's sad how many people don't get it.

Both. The downloadable patch currently affects all versions up to NL. OFB will require the addition of more values to the patch, but these changes can be performed manually if you study the pre-OFB patch.

I had a German base game, and it switched to English when I installed the US Nightlife expansion. Other than that, I had no problems. I think you should go ahead and try it. Assuming you can get through the intallation.

I sometimes wonder whether all those additional language files are necessary, or if they can be deleted?  (I know I did that without problems with Sims1.)
