http://www.babynames.com (http://www.babynames.com) Alphabetical, sortable by male or female, and gives the definition of the name. Title: Re: First Middle Last Name Lists Post by: syberspunk on 2006 February 12, 15:30:04 I know people have mentioned something similar before, but what my sister has been doing, at least for some of her sims, is following a filipino tradition for baby naming. You take part of the father's name and part of the mother's name to make the baby's name.
In one household, the father is Agapito and the mother is Lourdes. The two children she had them start out with was a daughter, Agadessa, and son, Lourapito. ;D You can come up with some pretty cute :D and pretty ugly :P names with this method. If anything, it can be quite amusing when you're trying to struggle with making a name that isn't absolutley horrible and still actually sounds like a name instead of a cleaning product or corporation name. lol. ;D Ste Title: Re: First Middle Last Name Lists Post by: AnastasiaRenai on 2006 February 12, 17:01:12 filipino tradition for baby naming. You take part of the father's name and part of the mother's name to make the baby's name. I didn't know this was a filipino tradition. That's how I got my name. It came out pretty nice. But just barely, I think I got lucky. But my parents are Haitian, and I don't think they were following any kind of tradition. But I've tried to figure out how to name my future children after me and my husband, and with a slight variation, one might be pretty, but that's about it. We would have some terrible names for our children. They will have to have their own names in the end. Thanks for mentioning that - that gives me a really good idea for surnames one of my neighborhoods, where even in gen 1 quite a few sims share the same surname and hyphenated surnames for coupled sims are looking awfully awkward as the original surnames are already kind of long (Kurosawa-Gonzales, eeeh!). I've heard of/seen many unique names that come about that way. Some that are nice and some that are not so. Heheh. But, I'm sure this is probably not totally isolated to filipinos only. Other cultures may adopt a similar method as well. I just know, a lot of my cousins, and cousins of cousins and friends and relatives and relatives of friends and friends of relatives :P who have some interesting names because of this. :) For example, one of my cousins is Roel because his dad's name is Romeo and his mom's name is Elsie. For the longest time, while we were kids, it had been unique, at least to me. But surprisingly, since then, I've known other Roels. Although I don't know how they were named. Maybe it was a coincidence as well that their parents names started with a Ro and and El. The two children she had them start out with was a daughter, Agadessa, and son, Lourapito. ;D How does one pronounce the name Lourdes? I've always wondered and now seems as good a time to ask as any. My mom says it's pronounced like "lords." There's a place in Brazil called Lourdes and it's pronounced "lo-OOR-jees." So what does the name really sound like? Title: Re: First Middle Last Name Lists Post by: jrd on 2006 February 13, 23:15:16 The Brazilian Lourdes is pronounced lo-OOR-jees
The French Lourdes is pronounced lOOrd Dunno what people who'd use placenames as a name would pronounce it like. Title: Re: First Middle Last Name Lists Post by: Emma on 2006 February 13, 23:33:26 It can also be pronounced 'Loor-dez' :D

I love the Seventh Sanctum one too, I'm bookmarking all of those when I get off work ;D No problem i bookmarked em as i found them or people gave the links on other forums. Their extremely useful I use them for character names in storys and games, for sims i tend to use a baby name book i have sitting around. Title: Re: First Middle Last Name Lists Post by: themaltesebippy on 2006 February 14, 21:43:43 Save them to your computer and look at them when you need a name. One word for you: wordwrap. How do you expect people to read all that garbage? More like look at them when you want to have a seizure. Title: Re: First Middle Last Name Lists Post by: HelloKit on 2006 February 15, 19:49:55 One word for you: wordwrap. How do you expect people to read all that garbage? More like look at them when you want to have a seizure. The files only appear not to be wrapped due to a difference in the way Windows vs. other OSes handle line breaks. Those blocks you see between the names in Notepad are actually the line breaks. If you open them in WordPad or Word, or probably any other rich text editor, you will see each name on its own line the way Simsbaby intended. And for future reference, insults are probably not the best way to express that you're having trouble reading something that someone put hard work into providing to everyone without asking anything in return. Title: Re: First Middle Last Name Lists Post by: Simsbaby on 2006 February 15, 21:18:51 Sorry, I have never used a windows. I didn't know that it would look like that.
Title: Re: First Middle Last Name Lists Post by: HelloKit on 2006 February 16, 17:03:38 Sorry, I have never used a windows. I didn't know that it would look like that. Not your fault, Simsbaby... it is actually Windows that violates the standard, not your Mac. :) Title: Re: First Middle Last Name Lists Post by: vilia on 2006 February 21, 00:26:20 I find this site handy http://www.census.gov/genealogy/names/names_files.html for naming townies.
Title: Re: First Middle Last Name Lists Post by: comradebunny on 2006 February 21, 17:21:28 The phone book is also a good source for names.
Title: Re: First Middle Last Name Lists Post by: Morphar on 2006 February 21, 22:05:09 You can add this to the list too. I like it. http://www.behindthename.com/random/ Title: Re: First Middle Last Name Lists Post by: Emma on 2006 February 21, 22:22:58 I always use the Family Creator (http://mikeinside.modthesims2.com/family/index.html)
Title: Re: First Middle Last Name Lists Post by: Renatus on 2006 February 23, 19:20:41 The phone book is also a good source for names. It's better if you live in the States, where any given area is more likely to be ethnically diverse. If you want ethnic diversity in names and you're in most other countries, you'll be out of luck. I mean, sure, I could do it, but then all of my sims would have to be Finnish... ;) The Behind the Name lists and generator are my personal favourite. |
