Title: Default eye replacements
Post by: Pegasys on 2006 February 10, 03:54:22
I'm using a set of default eye replacements I downloaded off MTS2, and I do like them a lot, definitely better than the Maxis eyes, but I'm still looking for that ULTIMATE set of eye replacements. One thing in particular I'm looking for is that the brown eyes are a true, deep, dark, brown -  NOT light brown, NOT a dark gray,  but rather like dark chocolate. Also that the eyes are not too shiny, goopy or having overly thick eyelashes. Any suggestions?

I have been looking for the exact same thing the past few days. I downloaded some from MTS2 that everyone here seemed to like, but I didn't like them for the blue eyes at all. Irises were too small and pale. I don't like the "realistic look" that a lot of people like, or the shiny look. I'll be watching this thread!

I'm using lyran's right now, but I'm not 100% happy with them, either. I'm picky.  :P

I have a set of eye replacements that I really like, not too shiny or weird looking, but the browns are not that dark.  More like a hazelish colour. I'd be interested also to see what everyone else is using.

I have yet to find anything that I like as well as this set that GunMod made from Helaene's "sparkling eyes" series:

http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=88441&highlight=default

Admittedly these are VERY shiny eyes. I actually choose other (less shiny) eyes for most of the Sims I create myself, but these particular eyes work really nicely on all of my townies and Maxis Sims, whereas some of the eyes that I like better look strange on some faces.

I have been looking for good brown eyes since Bella's eyes began showing up in various grandchildren. Unfortunately, if I find brown ones I like, the blues I hate. Too pale. I guess there's no law saying they all have to be from one set, though, huh?

I too use Haelene's eyes that GunMod made into default replacements. After using these eyes, I would not use any others. they are very lifelike and liquid.  I have a default set of skins that I like from Jfreddog, but if GunMod can make Haelene's skins default I will be all over that in a heartbeat.

I just found these on MTS2 today. Haelene's latest set have been made into defaults, as well by Greenlea:

http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=129409

Haven't tried them out, but they look nice in the pictures. The brown is more greenish brown, though, I think.

Okay, I finally remembered who made my default eyes, thankfully.  It was driving me crazy.

They are Lyran default replacement (http://www.lyran.net/ts2/), and they all look quite nice in the game.

There are already a few default sets of her skintones on MTS2, just not by GunMod. I was using the default replacements of her 805 series for a while, before I switched to SimCribbling's #7 series. (Aside from liking them better around the eyes, he's also got matching alien and zombie skins that someone also made into defaults.)

I too use Lyran's eyes. I'm quite happy with them. Sometimes I think the light blue is a little too light but I mostly think that when they end up on a dark-skinned sim.

I use barcelonista's default realistic eyes from MTS2. If you go to the second page in the thread, she includes some default dark brown eyes that are absolutely gorgeous, and two different colors for the blue. I am using these eyes on all of my CAS sims now, I think they are perfect.

I use Syera's default replacements.  You could look at them and see if you like them.  Go to www.springhole.net/bogsims then click on Genetics and they're listed under Syera>Eye Colors.

They look very nice. But the brown still doesn't look very brown to me - it looks kind of gray, at least on my monitor.

Thanks everyone for your links and suggestions. Ellatrue, I have been using Barcelonista's default realistic eyes; they come closest to what I want, I just wish the browns were a bit browner and the greens a tad bit greener. I'm picky too, I guess.  But maybe I can replace the default brown with a different one if I can figure out how to do it.

I'm picky too Brynne. IMO, barcelonista's eyes are too small in the color area, they seem to be rolling back in my sims' heads and the greens aren't green enough for me. Stunning eyes, very magnificent, but I"m insatiably picky. I delete beautiful things all the time due to one itty bitty flaw. I'm waiting to see what Enayla's (http://www.modthesims2.com/member.php?u=40418) eyes are going to look like, I got a couple of them with her skin tones and love them.

I use the ones by sugarandcaffeine

http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=56315

I have tried other peoples but they just don't look as good in-game, imho

of course some people don't care for the realistic bit of red on the edges (they are like slightly bloodshot eyes)

yesterday I went looking (at mts2) for some eyes I downloaded ages ago, loved them but hated that custom = dominant issue and got rid of them (oddly enough I didn't have more copys of them on this computer...must be on my other one) well I found them (by going to the last page of eyes and working backward) and laughed when I realized they were also made by sugarandcaffeine (back then I didn't keep track of whos stuff I downloaded)

Title: Re: Default eye replacements
Post by: Renatus on 2006 February 10, 14:08:20
I use those too, Sleepycat. :) I really like the red around the eye - when the sims look to the side, or up, or open their eyes really really wide, it looks more real without looking too realistic. I don't like so-called realistic eyes most time because of the heavy shading that always seems to be put around the iris - when the sims look anywhere but straight ahead there's that big chunk of smudge. Even the flat paper look of plain white is better than that.

I feel the same way,
I've downloaded every half decent looking custom skin and eye (as a once and for all) I could find over the past 2 weeks and still have yet to find anything I like better than what I have. (Lyran's eyes)

I was excited when I saw Barcelonista's set of Real Eyes, I think the dark blue is gorgeous, but the rest...

edit: apparently the caffeine is wearing off and I need sleep >:(

Great set Syera,
It was in my folder of eyes to test but I hadn't made it that far in the alphabet (so... many... eyes...) I checked it out and it looks great on the townies.
I particularly like that unlike so many others, your green is actually green. I don't understand why so many people make them in shades that clash with certain skin tones (usually dark)

I think the problem for most (myself anyway) is that a choice has to be made between Realistic and Maxis style with improvements. The two just can't be mixed, Maxis style eyes look silly in real skin and real eyes look spooky in Maxis type skin...

I predict the novelty of realistic skins that look superb on the right Sim while zoomed in (but can look quite monstrous otherwise) will wear off quickly for me and I'll go back to a Maxis style for my default, saving the 'real' skins and eyes for CAS sims.

Generally speaking, it's the light-blue eyes that get me.  People seem to always make them too light.  But yeah, a lot of "realistic" green eyes are just icky.

Yep, I agree.  It's for that reason that I rarely, if ever, download custom cosmetics - the 'realistic' style just looks odd with my Maxis-style Sims.

As it is, I've always kinda liked the "cartoony" style of the default Sims.  The Sims I've seen using 'realistic' skins do look rather spiffy... for about fifteen seconds.  Then I realize they totally clash with the 'cartoony' look of everything else in the game.  (http://www.springhole.net/smileys/tongue.gif)

Pegasys, you don't have to depend or wait on anyone for a particular default skin.  I wrote an easy to follow (I hope :) ) tutorial on how to make your own replacement skin. http://www.moreawesomethanyou.com/smf/index.php?topic=2930.0

Enayla has made some nice black eyes here.  http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=128180

I still haven't managed to settle on eyes that I really like.  I have way too many eyes in my folder, and I can't make up my mind about which one to ditch.  The ones that stayed the longest were the ones by Xnem, Helaene and Echo66.  They are not ALL good, so they need some serious purging.  Just too much choice!!  I've replaced my default green eye with Enayla green.  It might be a bit too green, I am not sure.

I think it's too hard to restrict yourself to the 5 Maxis default.  The best thing is to have a wide range and then fix the genetics so they will behave like maxis eyes.

I think the problem for most (myself anyway) is that a choice has to be made between Realistic and Maxis style with improvements. The two just can't be mixed, Maxis style eyes look silly in real skin and real eyes look spooky in Maxis type skin..

The spookiest thing I saw was a ultra-realistic skin tone. (over Xenem's site) coupled with flat Maxis eyes. Man it looked weird.  It looked as if a real person had their eyes replaced by cartoon eyes.  It was really spooky.
Well at least I finally got rid of all my skins.  I'm sticking with Enayla's skins for now.  She has a wide range of colors, they are gorgeous, and it makes my population look consistant to have all the same style of skins.

Title: Re: Default eye replacements
Post by: Batelle on 2006 February 10, 16:40:14
I use Helaene's realistic eyes as my defaults and I think they're lovely over all.  The lighter colors also have lighter pupils, which doesn't look right to me.

I've phased out almost all of my custom eyes that are simple recolors of the Maxi eyes just because they clash stylistically with the majority of the other sims.  I also have gotten rid of flat looking eyes and eyes that are a bit wavy at the edges. I love the color of the eyes that Enayla has packaged with her skins, but I don't like how they look along the lower lid.

These are the ones that I am currently using too.  Although the eyes are a tad too big and bright for my taste.  I like Barcelona's eyes but  they're a lil small and not quite bright enough.  Guess I'm real picky too!

I really like some of exnems eyes.  I had to download a whole bunch but suprisingly there are a few shades in there that are very nice.  I don't think anyone has made any defaults out of his creations.

I'll be keeping an eye out on this thread too, incase someone knows where there may be nicer ones.  Either way tho, look on the bright side, anything is better than the default maxis eyes!

BTW Issy, it's incredibly easy to make default eyes.  It's literally just a few clicks in SimPE.

His eyes are avalaible at mts2 http://www.modthesims2.com/showthread.php?t=108151, but not the default set.  I don't know if he re-used the same eyes and made them into default.  My guess is yes, but I don't know.

Doesn't really matter because you can make a default set in about 5 minutes.

My bad.  :-[

On another note:  I am so creeped out now looking at these realistic skins (not just anatomically correct, but skin that looks like it was ripped off by Hannibal Lecter and then sewn onto the Sim) and realistic eyes.  I think I'll stick with my cartoony stuff.

So Lyall, if you do post it here, I beg you, change that frigging background

Why do eyes never look on my sims like they look in the sims in the pictures? Why???

Nice contacts :)

Oh one further note:  If you download Gunmod's replacement eyes.  (too lazy to link to it), you get one file that contains all 5 replacement eyes.  You edit it the same way as shown in the above tutorial.  So you only have to deal with one file instead of 5.

The tutorial Angelyne posted in Peasantry really covers anything involving swapping textures  ;)  The only real difference between doing eyes or skintones is the number of textures used.

The tutorial Brynne followed is only different because it has you exporting the texture file from another eye package rather then exporting it as a project in Bodyshop.

Those contacts are by Lyran, btw, and they're awesome. I just wish I didn't have to have my sims all wear contacts.

I haven't looked at sim contacts but it might be possible to turn them into real sim eyes...probably just a matter of copy & paste in a graphics program...

Title: Re: Default eye replacements
Post by: BlueSoup on 2006 February 11, 01:04:44
I'm pretty sure all of Lyran's eyes are available as both custom eyes and contacts.  And there are dark brown eyes available on that site, so theoretically if someone liked an eye out of each colour family she has, they could mix and match and make a default set of their own.

Inded this can be quite useful.  Let's say you have these eyes that have spread through your neighbourhood that you have grown to hate.  Locate the offending file, replace the texture with one you extracted from some eyes you like and voila.  All your sims have now a new look.  Modify the genetic field in the file from someone else than zero (1 or 2) and it will now behave like a Maxis eye and will no longer dominate in all your sim kids.

You could also delete the offending file, but I believe your eyes will be replaced with Maxis default randomly (I'm not sure about that).  In any case this method gives you more control, and I don't like the idea of having a sim who points at a file that no longer exists.

It does. I have all those contacts in custom eyecolors, as well. I really like them, except they do have that shading someone mentioned before that you can see when they  open their eyes really wide. That's why I'm on the hunt for more.

If you make your favorite 5 into defaults then your sims wouldn't need the contacts..might be a good temporary solution untill you find the eyes that are perfect  ;)

why on earth did Maxis do light blue & dark blue eyes but not light&dark for green & brown   :P

I tried the ones by Halaene that GunMod made into defaults and found the whites were too dark (as if they were bruised like you said) and most of the custom eyeliner/lashes I have, looked horrible (black eyes) with them, even when the eyeliner/lashes weren't "heavily applied" (even the eyeshadow didn't look right) and the color of the eyes themselves sort of got lost in the darkness of the whites  :-\

I just made YET ANOTHER set into defaults ( I can't believe how easy it is!) and I'm still not happy. There's a weird line you can see when they open their eyes wide. And they looked so purty in the pics, too.

I'll never find that "perfect" set.   :-\

Back to the contacts, again...

I think the problem with downloading eyes is that you always get screen shots of either eyeballs, or a Sim staring straight ahead.

That would be great if that's what you needed, but what would be really handy would be screenshots of Sims using them with a few of their funny 'extreme' expressions. That way, people who like me who'd prefer no shading around the eyes can skip them, heh heh

The only 'real' eyes I didn't mind were Barcelonista's, the shading is there, but it's not black, more of a pale pinkish 'barely there' colour that looks ok so far.

Why do Barcelonista's eyes look good in everyone else's game and horrible on my sims? Why??? Whine whine whine...

I just made ANOTHER set of replacement defaults from some eyes I found at TSR. No shading, nothing fancy, but maybe that's all my sims will accept. I wouldn't care if almost the entire Bayfield family didn't have the dark blue maxis eyes.  That's about a billion sims right there. >:(

A billion?  Are you sure??   ;D

I must be very, very bad.  Syera brought me her replacement eyes one day and told me to try them out.  I said, "Okay," and put them in my game and truly I've never noticed the difference!  (Now she'll probably brain me when she reads this tomorrow!)

At any rate, I think almost everything she does is great.  She's very creative and talented--unlike me.  :P

Brynne:  Lyran has default replacement eyes now that are exactly the same as her contacts.  I have been using them for a while, I'm not sure how long.  Have you tried them?  I thought I'd let you know before you tried making them yourself.

There is no law that says default blue eyes must be replaced with a blue eye texture. Go wild, make them violet, indigo, whatever you want.

This is the difference.

Coming out of lurkerdom just because my favorite eyes haven't been mentioned yet.  I think that Vaygirl's eyes over TSR (I know...evil paysite) are the best eyes for sims.  I keep downloading but of everything I've downloaded hers are the only ones that don't look weird from any angle.

I don't have a subscription there anymore so I don't have all her newest eyes but I was just there today and I saw that she had made a shadow overlay to make them more realistic for those who think they're too cartoony.

They're not default replacement but since the directions on how to make them default have been posted several times I think I'll just slink back to the shadows...carry on.

Yes, I mentioned earlier I have those, too. My problem with those, and the contacts, is that the shadow looks weird when they open their eyes wide. In their normal expressions, they look great. I found some on TSR that are pretty nice that I made into defaults, they're by...ugh. Damn if I can remember. But they have a bunch of hues in each color category to choose from. If you don't mind the white part, which kinda bugs me, they're really nice. If I remember the name, I'll post it.  :P

Sorry, I guess I was confused.  I hadn't noticed the shadow you mention on mine, but maybe I'm used to it.  I tried the ones from Laverwinkle sims, and they just didn't seem natural to me.  Like someone else mentioned, they were too bright.  You could see what color the sims eyes were from way across the room!  I don't mean to bash Dylan's work, because they looked great on the site.  I just didn't care for them myself, although I do LOVE his alien skin and eyes replacements.  So I put Lyran's eyes back in.  I hadn't realized I was using hers until I went to check her site and realized they were the ones I was already using!   :o

It's funny, I hadn't noticed the shadows until someone else pointed them out. Now it drives me nuts!
I've made another (this will be my 6th I think) set of eyes, all off of Janna's eyes from Sims Connection. Many of my sims already have them, so I know I like those. I don't know why I didn't think of it before.  :P
Anyway, about to restart the game and see if they work.

making your own defaults is addictive  :D

So Brynne, how did it go?

Well, Sleepycat, I haven't posted in a while because I've actually been playing the game !  ;D
I'm very happy with the last set I did using Janna's eye colors.

Thats great news Brynne! about both - playing the game and the eye colors *laughs*

It's always more fun to play when your happy with how your sims look  :D

I don't have pics of the other colors, yet, but here are my new default brown eyes and dark blue eyes (courtesy of Janna from Sims Connection, of course). I'm not crazy about the so-called "realistic" look, so this look suits me just fine.

aieee...so I went on another downloading spree, as if 166 eye colors was NOT enoughalready!
Anyway I came across a nice little tutorial for making your own eyes from photo images. The only part of the eye it replaces is the iris, so no having to worry about the shadowing that some people don't like.
It looks really simple, even to me ( and I'm still trying to figure ot how to recolour clothing!) The link in case anybody wants it is  http://www.iamaphex.net/nicole/BasicEyeTutorial.html. I'm bookmarking it for a time when I have a little bit better grip on photoshop :P

I just found seomi's site (http://seomi.zzo.net/).... and I have to say, I fell in love with her eyes...
actually, I had found those earlier, however, I couldn't download because I was at my boyfriends...
