Title: Help please with frickin downloads
Post by: simmiecal on 2006 January 05, 16:43:32
I've been having a problem in the last couple of days with downloads. It seems to happen with larger files. I start the download and everything seems to be fine. At some point in the download, I notice that the modem lights have stopped flashing and the download doesn't progress any further. It stays that way until I get a message that the download has timed out.

It took less than 2 minutes to get to this point in the download and has now been stuck at this point for over 10 minutes. If I restart the download, the same thing happens: it starts, it downloads fine and then all of a sudden - nothing.

I'm not very teckie, but does anyone have any suggestions of what I should be checking? This problem seems to have started sometime over the weekend. I haven't installed any new programs or changed any settings on my firewall. Any ideas?

Have the problem uploads been from the same site or random sites?

I've noticed it with megaupload, but they are the only ones that I am pulling large files from at the moment.

If you've only noticed it with the one site, the issue very well could be on their end. I've had problems like that with particular sites before, and all I could do was wait a few days until the site stopped being asstarded.

It might be a problem with their site, hard to tell.  From my limited experience with megaupload, I think the service sucked.

Try a download manager that can resume downloads.  Although I don't know if that works with megaupload.  There is no point in beating your head against the wall until you've established that the problem is on your end.  Try downloading from other sites to see.

In general, it seems that the net has been slow over the last few days.  I've had problems with megaupload too (the 2nd versoin of Byrnne's sim was a royal pain to download).  I usually wait and try at off peak hours (after 10pm).

Thanks, I guess misery loves company. At least I know it's not just me. I've also tried at different times and have had different results.

Thanks everyone for the responses.
