Title: Digital downloads on Mac?
Post by: Incognito on 2012 March 29, 20:57:12
I've recently purchased a Macbook Pro and I'm looking forward to playing Sims on a capable machine. The only problem is, most of my games were bought as digital downloads through that retched Origin, and now since Origin isn't Mac-compatible, I'm unsure what to do short of buying new hard copies of my games. Does anyone have any more suitable suggestions, or have been in a similar situation themselves?

Not that I've got any helpful advise or anything, but is Origin really vomit?

Origin really is vomit. Absolute and utter vomit. I'm ashamed of myself for using it but my eagerness got the better of me during weaker times.

ARR it to play it on Mac.  You've already paid for it once.  No sense in paying for another copy, which is what EA wants you to do.

I suppose that seems like the only sensible solution at this point. It's been recommended that I partition my hard drive and install Windows on there to play Sims, but I didn't buy a Mac so that I could go back to using Windows again.

True.  Most people buy a Mac because the idea of paying $1,000 more for an OS and an Apple sticker gives them a boner that won't quit.

I plan on wearing my Apple sticker smeared across my face with pride.

Or I'll just leave it in the box and enjoy a working laptop.

OH LOOK IT IS A MONTH WITH AN R IN IT. WE'D BETTER HAVE A BORING ARGUMENT ABOUT MAC V PC. WE'VE NEVER DONE THAT BEFORE.

Would it be completely selfish of me to re-hijack this thread to ask, once again, if there are ANY other solutions? Namely some magical way to convert Sims downloaded games to work on a Mac? Or some sort of fantastic fairy dust I can sprinkle over everything to make the world a better place?

I saw some sort of half assed tutorial on how to convert downloads, but these were games downloaded from Digitalriver or something along those lines, and without being able to install Origin, there's no way I can get the files onto my Macbook in the first place.

Arr the games, install onto the mac, realise they run like molasses due to crappy code and not having any sort of mac optimisation, install windows and then use the arred editions to play. Leave origin completely out of it.

I'm afraid you'll find this ^ to be true. I use Boot Camp for games only -- although on an iMac as I'm not a big gamer and don't need my games to travel.

I admit to being utterly ignorant in the way of the Cult of Jobs, but if there's one company I dislike more than Apple it would probably be Electronic Arts so for the shits and grins I searched a bit on this.

If you pull up EA's default Sims 3 page (at least the default for me) it lists versions as "Platform: PC, PC Download, Mac" but if you pull up the Sims 3 page for the Asia region it shows something interesting "Platform: PC Download, PC, Mac Download, Mac".

I wonder if there may be some way to trick EA into thinking you are in another region. I still think Arrring it is way less hassle though. As long as you don't care about all that social network sending your sims on tour with your friends shit, then you aren't really losing anything by Arrring it because you paid for it.

I suppose there is the principle of wanting EA to do right by their customers but I would not hold my breath on that one.

I have had to Arrr shit I legitimately bought from EA before myself, like the time the Dragon Age Origins servers got Alzheimer's and forgot that I owned all the DLC and wouldn't let me load my savegames that were saved with them. It's EA. Shit happens. Assume the worst and do what you have to do to use the software you rightfully own.

Why, oh WHY does Sooze not have an indignant Apple boner avatar? If only I had $50 on hand to enforce this idea...

My $500 HP craptop with an i3 and integrated graphics could probably play the game just as well as a MacBook.

Actually, IAMTheRad Simported with me using Arrred games. As long as you have an account you can use all the social features. From what I hear you only need to have games registered to the account to use the forum, you are able to create an account without registering any games. I haven't tried this myself though.

Ever since MTS released a mod to unlock all the Simport objects, I've completely lost what little interest I had in that part of the game.  Fuck you, EA, no pseudo-multiplayer bullshit for me.

Yeah, the primary reason I was trying to do it at first was for the unlocks, which would have taken an obnoxiously long amount of time to get since you have to have each of the three Showtime profession types go on a bunch of different types of tours at different levels.

The unlock mod pretty much removes the main reason to Simport. I suppose it could be mildly useful to get an adult sim out of your hair for a while, but even then there are some annoyances in the way it works.

I have all of one simfriend who has Showtime and I sent one of my sims on tour to her town a couple of weeks ago. Well after a short while in sim time in my game (too short if you ask me) he returned. However I cannot simport any more sims, even in totally different neighborhoods, because that sim is still in the simport queue. Apparently, she never plays her game and until she does and the tour actually happens in sim time in her game my simport queue will remain full with this one sim and unable to send anyone else.

You should be able to cancel it by going into your Simport passport and clicking on the sim's portrait in there. Though I've had multiple sims in the queue (you can have up to 4) so I'm not entirely sure why you're having that problem. You're not the only one though, this is a known and often reported bug.
