Has anybody ever seen Sims reading recipe books autonomously?? Just curious.. Mine only read "regular books". It'd be cool to see them read something productive once in a while! That works too. The recipe books can even be in the library, if you select that option in awesomemod.

What is this "without awesomemod" method of which you speak? You can get recipe books in the library that will not disappear with awesomemod, which might be useful to the OP, so any point about playing without awesomemod is irrelevant. I have AM installed, with the 'recipe books in library' option enabled, and still have not seen a single recipe book in the library. What else do I have to do to get them there?
