Title: phone hack
Post by: tryoutz on 2005 November 12, 09:23:50
When in the h.e. double l. are you going to fix the phone hack for NL!? ;) I'm dying here! Do you want my blood on your hands? I hate the phone but it is a major part of my play it just rings rings rings RINGS RINGS................! I'm GOING TO END MY LIFE IF I DON'T GET IT SOON! :'(

                            P.S
Without you this game would suck thanks a million for all the free stuff and time you devoted to it. If I wasn't a man I would say I love you. ;)

Probably when Pescado gets the game.  Keep your pants on.

I play more than a month with the "phonehack" (in test), and it works fine.

The college clock - I didn't remove it at all, when I installed NL, and it works properly (more than 2 months).

gali, I've used the same phonehack, and I have problems - the phone will only set to off, or else it rings constantly until answered.  If a sim answers the phone, the caller then appears on the lot as soon as they put the phone down.  there are definitely some glitches with it, but it's still preferable to not having it at all.

I agree...it's still better than nothing at all, I get the teleported Sim as well.....all of this I can deal with, but that ringing is for..ev..er.  I really wish I could set the ringer.  :D

Perhaps they changed some parameters  meanwhile?

Try this one, which I use. Really I don't have any troubles with this one.

While I haven't tested any ring settings other than "off", I haven't had any problems.  By the way, thank you Gali for posting in the phone hack thread that you were able to successfully use it.  This is the one hack I won't play without.

Is this the same one that JM posted in the NL test folder?  I've had the sims teleport over on occasion, and most of the time I don't mind.  I can always teleport them out or ask them to leave.  Or I can just pretend that they invited them over. :D

Another thing that happens is when a sim calls to invite someone downtown, they won't ask until I tell the sim to hang up.  They will talk for hours and I'll let them build the relationship, but then I'll decide they have had enough and I want them to do something else, so I'll tell them to hang up, and the message pops up saying "Do you want to go downtown?"  I think that only happens once for every lot after you install NL, isn't that right?

Title: Re: phone hack
Post by: ZephyrZodiac on 2005 November 12, 17:24:18
Well, I think it's for each family each time they move house, not each lot, as I've had it happen several times on a lot that's been used to start sims off.  Also happens when you move students into a house too.

I used to like the option of setting the number of rings, though, and now it just doesn't seem to work.  (And it can go on ringing right through the night if you don't turn it off!  Another reason I don't use mobiles any more - my sims would never get any sleep!)

Title: Re: phone hack
Post by: RainbowTigress on 2005 November 12, 17:32:21
JM said he fixed that in the phone hack, cell phones should not wake up sleeping sims.  I have not had a problem with it in quite a while.  I think Maxoid Tom said something about it, it may have been addressed in the patch.  I haven't had sims get woken up by their cell phones in a long time, and all my sims have them.

Title: Re: phone hack
Post by: ZephyrZodiac on 2005 November 12, 17:45:43
Oh, well, it's so long since I've used them on a regular basis, if I want a sim to use one, I just give them one, and then take it away again!  Prevents the danger of me ruining another lot that took me hours to build because I forget to check if someone's still on the phone before I save!

Thanks Gali for posting that...it is different than the one I dl'd form the NL folder, which was dated oct 1, and this one oct 4.

The former gave me the same problems that everyone mentions here.

So Pescado updated this without telling us? Not sure.

That might explain why some of us don't get so many problems with the phone hack.

I can only have the ringer on or off.
I have only once had a sim teleport in after a call.
All my sims have cellphones and are not woken in the night.

Unawesome observation:

I downloaded all of my NL hacks just two weeks ago when I finally installed NL.  I have not observed any differences between phone hack in Uni and using the phone hack I downloaded two weeks ago for NL.

Since the phone drives me crazy, I think I'd be the first person whining if it wasn't working the same for me...but I haven't been looking for problems.  I always set my ringer to 5.  I'm going to play again in a little bit and I'll take specific notice of the phone hack.

--------------
edit:  I don't know where I picked up my copy of JM's phone hack... I'm pretty sure that I got one of my NL hacks off of a post that Gali made, rather than an official JM post.  If Gali posted this phone hack previously, that might have been where I got it.

Yes, I'm confused, I'm sorry.  I get a little basket case like when installing an expansion pack and cleaning up.

I'm not sure they are different, but of course I don't know much about the code.  The file sizes are the same, 327 KB, and the time is one hour and one minute different.  Daylight savings time would account for the hour, since timestamps often appear an hour different after DST, but not sure about the minute.  But I would think even a small change would cause a difference in the file sizes.

P.S. Gali, I noticed that there is another copy of the phone hack zipped inside this file.  You might want to delete it and re-upload the file.  It would save a little bit of space and bandwidth. :)

Yes, I posted it before, but cann't find the post, lol. It's the same as uploaded here.
Can you give me the link? Thanks.

May be that after  the "in test" date, in which I downloaded the hack, some parameters were changed, which cause problems.

Rainbow, if you use the other uploaded Phone Hack, it isn't suppose to cause any problems. I remember that I volunteered to "beta test" this hack, downloaded it, and played with it about a week, and reported that it works fine.

Just played the game for a bit, paying attention to the phones.  No problem setting ringers, yay.

I did have a "teleport" after Angela Pleasant asked Mara March to go downtown (at the end of a phone conversation).  Mara declined and Angela Pleasant telported to the lot.

The ringer setting, other than Off, does not presently work for the test phone hack. You can turn it off, though.

The current build may resolve that, but I haven't posted it up yet. There's going to be a few cutbacks there first.

Title: Re: phone hack
Post by: ZephyrZodiac on 2005 November 14, 12:24:39
Correct what I said about Pleasantview - the problems have started.  The visitor thing seems mainly to happen if a sim autonomously answers the phone and starts to chat, and you queue them to do something else.

And, to all the disbelievers, if JM agrees the hack has still got problems with the ringer settings, check again!

I believe him because I've experienced this too.  I usually set 5 rings and this has not been having any effect.  I also thought that the teleporting sims had something to do with incoming calls, but when I had my sim hanswer a call on his cell phone last night, it didn't happen.  What you said about them answering autonomously makes sense though because I hardly ever let them answer the phone on their own, I usually cancel it when I see it in their queue.  So this may be why I haven't see this happen as much.  Next time I am going to empty their queue and see what happens when they answer the phone on their own.  That may be the key.

Trouble is if you have four or five sims on a lot and the phone rings, one of them will get to it before you can stop them!  Unless, of course, you pause your game.

Well, I usually keep my finger on the pause button. :D  I usally use the spacebar to keep going through my sims to see what they are all doing and keep them busy.  I guess I'm a control freak when it comes to my Sims.

LOL, well I'm an idiot.  If JM's post didn't prove the point already, my experience last night did.

Mary Sue Pleasant was in the middle of a last minute woo hoo on a date at home.  Her ^%$# cell phone started ringing (very loudly, in my ear), while the stereo was blaring (very loudly in my ear).  I'm going for points here... I'm trying to have her make a nice living off of being a P.U.R.E DJ and getting expensive presents from dates.  :D

Anyway, my estimate is that it rang 39.5 times before the date ended and I could take a breath and answer the freakin' phone.

In the words of a great 70's philosopher, nevermind.  (MarySue lives alone, which means there was no other Sim to pick up the phone and confuse me.)

Rosanne Rosannadana out.....

Title: Re: phone hack
Post by: Muisie on 2005 November 15, 22:58:41
Anyway, my estimate is that it rang 39.5 times ...

Sounds about right.  Only sims have the luxury of hearing the phone ring and instead eat, date, go to work, get promoted, come back home, pee, and then answer it.

I still get those even with the phone hack.  My sims have gotten calls from previous dates asking for another date and also their "friends" asking to go out on an outing.  Once she got a call to go downtown, and she accepted.  The message came up that the taxi would arrive shortly.  But then she got another from her date from the previous night asking for another date.  She declined, but then a message came up saying that the outing was ok but it could have been better if she'd put some effort into it!  I don't know what that was about as she never even had a chance.  A sim I'd never seen before ran into the house.  The taxi arrived, and my sim got in and went downtown by herself.  At least she picked up another date while she was there and brought him home, so the trip wasn't a total loss.

Title: Re: phone hack
Post by: RainbowTigress on 2005 November 16, 17:16:19
Last night, Stacey Beaker, Loki's toddler daughter, called his fiancee Lola Smith, to say that Loki had told her what a great time they had on their date (woah, did he tell her about all the woohoo also?!) so would Lola like to go downtown with her?  I said yes to see what would happen.  Well, first I got an error about Stacey when the lot was loading, and I hit reset.  When it finished loading, Stacey was sitting in the road in front of the telephone booth, and the car pulled up right to her.
She stood up and toddled off to the sidewalk, where her father, Lola, Loki's ex-wife Circe (very pregnant), and Vidcund's alien son Cosmo all unloaded from the car.  Loki broke up with Circe because he caught her cheating on him with Vidcund, and she got pregnant with him while they were downtown on a date.  So he kicked her to the curb.  She still hasn't given birth to the baby, but she is living with Vidcund, and they plan to marry.  Anyway, I thought it was a rather strange group since Loki still has furious thoughts about Circe and catching her cheating, but there were no fights.  Stacey the toddler sat out on the ground by the bench, and while the others were inside eating, she asked passersby for attention.
I checked on her once, and she had an older man talking to her and he patted her on the head and picked her up and tossed her in the air and snuggled her.  Kinda freaky.  Downtown is no place for a toddler!

Well, she got hungry and tried asking people for food, and they would pat her on the head, but they weren't able to get it for her.  They would stamp their feet and have a bottle with a red X through it in their thought bubble along with the blocked path thought bubble.

Meanwhile, Loki surprised Lola with popping the question after dinner while Circe and Cosmo looked on.  Of course she accepted, and Circe never batted an eyelash.

The funny thing is when I canceled Lola's dining icon to have her make out with him, since she and Loki were on the inside of the booth, she just jumped over the table to get out, and so did Loki.  I wish I could do that!  No having to ask people to move to let you out.  Anyway, Stacey continued to ask people for attention, and sometimes when they did, she would refuse to let them touch her and throw a tantrum.  I figure this is because she didn't know them well enough, but why did she ask them in the first place?
Lola asked Loki on a date, which was going well, but he bailed out with thoughts of a toilet.  So Lola went home alone, leaving poor Stacey at the restaurant because there was nothing else she could do.  It was funny, but weird.  How did little Stacey get to the phone in the first place?!
