Title: Game not loading issues: Virus protection the problem?
Post by: MadameUgly on 2008 October 28, 16:54:10
Background:  new computer, fresh install of sims stuff (all eps but AL, all sps but Ikea, non-patched version of FT--cracked with correct crack, vanilla game).

After getting everything installed, I added the crack and the game loaded without a problem (multiple times).

Added McAfee anitvirus protection.

Now game won't load.  Tried a few recommended fixes (bypassing launcher, deleteing groups cache) but still nothing.

I read a thread stating sims 2 and Norton don't get along.  Is that also the case with McAfee?  Is there anything I can do to try and get them to play nicely BEFORE I uninstall McAfee and try a different virus protection?  Also, if I do try another virus protection, what's recommended?  (I've seen AVG mentioned, is that really a good choice?).

*shakes fist at this mess*

Thanks in advance.

I have McAfee and don't have any problems with my game.

If you're using a nocd crack, you should have been bypassing the launcher to begin with.

I had a thing where my game sometimes wouldn't load, until I bypassed the launcher altogether.

Antivirus never stopped my game from loading IIRC but on my old machine it slowed my game down a lot. I always used to go into Task Manager before I played, to end all the extra apps.

Edit: spelling

As far as changing your virus scanner goes, I suggest AVG and/or Avast antivirus, both are free. (Normally you do not want to run more than one antivirus, but Avast is designed to run as a secondary scanner and I use both programs without a problem.)

Update:  I was so far off it wasn't even funny.

Come to find out my new machine's dual core is what's the issue.  I guess the game gets all confused (technical term right there!) with the duals.  I have a nice work around now and have been able to get into the game (in fact, right after posting here, the game loaded fine--of course).

Thanks for the advice though.

Avast isn't designed to be used as a secondary scanner- where did you read that information? It's a full antivirus program, with on access protection.

Erm. Not sure where I read that, anymore. Some sort of FAQ on filesharing on how to be reasonably protected while pirating, same place I learned how to use Peerguardian to block IPs and such.

False info retracted, then. But I will say I do use both AVG and Avast at once with no problems...
