Title: Is there anyway to fix this sim?
Post by: kaitco on 2008 July 29, 23:22:54
Okay, here is the problem: So, I decided to create a story about one of the Pleasantview families and went back into the game to retrieve Pleasantview in its original state. I created a new neighborhood with the original Pleasantview, renamed all the files using the Ant Renamer and Voila! a new Pleasantview. As I played my new Pleasantview, I decided that I wanted to bring a sim from the Pleasantview I was current playing into the new neighborhood. In my own infinite wisdom, I just copied the character file from N001 to the new Pleasantview in N005. Of course, he did not show up in the new neighborhood, so I just deleted him and went about my business. However, when I went back to play him in my "current" neighborhood N001, all of his memories were deleted along with any relationships and family ties. I tried to go back into SimPe to add the relationships and, through various uses of the InSimenator, he more or less remembers everything as he should, but one problem remains. His family tree does not show his children. He shows them under relationships and all three have the "family" icon on their picture, but the family tree shows only him. When I go into the homes where the children are (he got "around" a bit, so his kids have different mothers), the children show one another as siblings, but they only show their mother. To explain it a bit better: The problem sim "Trotter Hayle" and the other sim "Lilith Pleasant-Hayle-Price" have two kids, Roland and Drew. Trotter had a child, a boy name Joel, with another woman. When I play the lot with Roland and Drew and click on their family tree, they show their mother, themselves as siblings and also their brother Joel, but they do not show their shared father Trotter. Playing Joel's lot also shows Joel and his mother in the family tree along with Roland and Drew, but still no father. I tried a method suggested to me on TSR about editing the family ties through SimPe, but when I click on one of his sons (Roland, for example), I get the error shown here: http://www.doriennesmith.com/error1.jpg (http://www.doriennesmith.com/error1.jpg) I know I am opening myself for rounds of ridicule with names like Trotter Hayle for my sims, but can anyone help me with this? I have all the EPs, except for BV and have none of the SPs. Here are the contents of the error window that shows in the example, if it is of help to anyone: See the end of this message for details on invoking just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

I think what you mean is that you "moved" the sim from N001 to N005 (not "copied"). If you just copied it, your sim would have remained intact in N001, no worries.
When moving sims, it is best to clone them using SimPE's simsurgery and then reclone them in bodyshop to set them up for the game. There's a tutorial on this somewhere about. You do have to manually enter interests and other personality data to more or less duplicate a sim.

I copied the character file from N001, pasted it into N005 and then tried to run N005. When he did not show in N005's sim bin, I deleted the character file from that folder and, when I ran Pleasantview, found out that sim had problems. :-[

Well, you get points for breaking your game in an original manner. :) But if you're getting a SimPE error, perhaps you should ask for assistance at that forum?

While this is almost definitely not the awesome solution, and may be something you've tried, have you tried using Insim's family tree to "make [sim] my child/parent/whatever"? As you're already using it it may be worth a try if you haven't already.

...and if all your fiddling around in SimPE has not already borked all these sims. You do keep a backup of your 'hoods, do you? If so, you can reload the backup from before the borkage.

These sims have been borked like this for a while and I figured this was a long shot. I make backups, but only once every few months or right before an EP is released, so I doubt it will help much. I have already tried the family tree from InSim, but my next project will be to have him make another baby and see how it plays out from there. If it is still not fixed, I will see what they make of this problem at at the SimPE forums, too. Thanks!

Eeesh. I thought people learned the folly of moving sims from hood to hood like that back when people were discovering that Strangeville Bella DID NOT GO with the Pleasantview neighborhood.

Perhaps for your new Pleasantview, you might just clone the sims you like from the old hood and rebuild them in CAS in your new hood.
See: http://www.moreawesomethanyou.com/smf/index.php/topic,8407.msg233211.html#msg233211
You will need to note down any interests, personality points, turn-ons/offs, etc. which you will need to enter manually. When you build them in CAS, you will have to set up the relationships there. This is really the only safe way to transfer sims between 'hoods.

True, but this was a rather ingenious way of doing the binned-occupied-lot bork without an actual binned lot. It's a much more targeted BFBVFS.

Yeah, with immediate DOOM! to be levied upon the new neighborhood as soon as the copied sim tries to gossip about someone that doesn't exist in the current neighborhood.
I'ma sing the doom song. Doom, doom DOOM. DOOMITY DOOM! DOOMITY DOOM!

If you just copied Trotter Hale's character file, that would have had no effect on the Trotter Hale in your original hood. Copying a file doesn't mess up the original. Whatever was wrong with him was caused by something else that happened in that hood. Probably something you did. Was Trotter Hale ever in the lot bin? Moving occupied lots into the simbin is a no-no even within the same 'hood. You end up with duplicate sims and unlinked files. Check to see if you have 2 Trotter Hale's in your original 'hood.
Editing family ties should be easy with SimPE. Open the family ties section, select your sim and then click on whatever sim you want to relate to him - checking the box so the relationship goes both ways. You might need to open and edit the sim relationships to check the box for family and set the relationships etc. If you're getting an error message on that sort of stuff, it's either a SimPE problem or your game is borked worse than you want to know. Check what version of SimPE you've got.
fyi - not all the info about a sim is in his character file - that has the stuff that's just about him. Things affecting other sims like memories & relationships are all in the neighborhood.package file. At least that's how I think it works.
