More Awesome Than You!

Due to headdesking stupidity on the part of Mr. Ambular, my internet access for the next week or so will be sporadic at best.   No #grah for me, alas.  ;_;  Keep the tubes warm for me, and apologies to anyone whose rightful cheese-ing gets delayed by this.

JolREUTERS - June 3, 2008 - There appears to be a rash of loss of intarwebz access lately at MATY.  Rohina yesterday (power outage), Nekonoai earlier today (power outage), and now Amber.  All the cool kids are doing it.

Is Mr.Ambular in league with various power companies to cause these problems?  We asked our on the street reporter who had this to say:
"Well, look, Mr.Ambular's just zis guy, y'know."

The question is, are these isolated incidents, or is there some cause for concern.  Could V be next?  Or Aggie.  Key among these questions is what will happen to the ongoing Diablo II games.  Only time will tell.

Must be something going around. My primary computer is sick and about to be carted off to the compy doctor.

I've been having interweb problems, as well. It's been storming here. Storms and DSL don't mix.

I've been having a wonky intarwebs connection. It's perfectly fine one second, dead the next.

Mine hasn't died yet, but the signal has been very erratic. It'll go from 56 mbps to 18 mbps, to 1 mbps, back up to 18... Well, you get the picture.

True, but it's worth it. I couldn't stand to be on dial-up. I don't even remember the last time I had to use dial-up!

Absolutely.  What would I do if I didn't pay $30 per month for something that becomes erratic every time some cloud widdles on the phone junction boxes?  :P


I can - it was when my ADSL modem fried, despite it being only 4 months old.

Or not...turns out it wasn't Comcast, it was a Windows update that broke ZoneAlarm.  O_o  Fixed now, all is well.

Well that confirms my hypothesis.  Same thing caused me no end of grief yesterday.

A LOT of people have had it happen, apparently.  The preferred workaround, rather than remove the update or ZoneAlarm, is to change ZA's Internet Zone security level from High to Medium.

Why did you update Windoze, anyway? Don't update, Microsoft likes to use Windoze Update to smuggle evilware onto your computer. If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

I do in fact have to agree with him this time. My sister put Windoze Vista SP1 on her laptop and it caused it to asplode in a BFBVFS. DO NOT WANT.

Yeah, I got 2 calls about that as well, friends who installed the Windows Update caused their ZoneAlarm to asplode. Was lovely. Uninstalling it and downloading the new version seemed to be the cure. Gotta love Windows Updates.

For me, my internet has been down more than up for about a month. Stupid squirrel chewed through the cable lines and so they got all corroded. Stupid squirrels. But it's all good now, Comcast man came out and replaced a buttload of cabling and splitters and connectors and all that jazz. Yay is life. I still hate comcast though and plan to switch as soon as possible to something less evil, like ... Verizon FiOS.

Clarificiation: new version of the Windows Update or of ZA?

To solve problem, download and install new version of ZA, I believe.  That seems to work, so far anyway.

Yup, reinstalling ZA seems to work.

Heh, I just got a ZA popup directing me to download the latest version...which took me to a page with a link to a download that doesn't exist.  *Facepalms*  Had to Google and surf around a bit to get to the actual update.  These guys really have not endeared themselves to me lately.

So that problem seems to be solved.  However, my ISP appears to have had a fire that fried part of their service centre and their email and billing services are down.  Fortunately my web access still seems to be up, although part of the ISPs website is down, presumed crispy.
