Title: Fixing Spelling Errors in Game: An Impossible Dream? Post by: stephbass on 2008 March 18, 09:03:03 Messers Awesome, the horrific spelling & grammatical errors unleashed upon me and other FreeTime victims is driving me nuts. Is there any way to retype the in-game chance cards/pop-ups/whatever? I thought I could live through the "Hey David, how's it going I haven't seen you much lately" peeve, but I don't know if I can go on for much longer with the Babelfish-esque run-ons we've been subjected to in this installment.
I am dangerously unawesome - no brains for computational logic or arithmetic, and while I do own SimPE, I really only look at it. Is it possible in SimPE/at all? Would it be relatively easy if so? Seriously though, I thought game publishers had armies of beta testers to catch this rubbish. Title: Re: Fixing Spelling Errors in Game: An Impossible Dream? Post by: J. M. Pescado on 2008 March 18, 09:05:59 Fixing spelling errors in the game is easy enough to do: just fix the relevant string entry. Finding it can be a bit tricky, though.

Yes.Title: Re: Fixing Spelling Errors in Game: An Impossible Dream? Post by: Charamei on 2008 March 18, 09:31:48 A string is not an integer or a boolean.
There ya go :P Okay, okay... it's text. And the entry is where it is entered. Title: Re: Fixing Spelling Errors in Game: An Impossible Dream? Post by: Simsample on 2008 March 18, 11:13:40 This is my current favourite text hash up in the game:

Title: Re: Fixing Spelling Errors in Game: An Impossible Dream? Post by: Simsample on 2008 March 18, 15:07:18 It seems to have been fixed for FT (that screenshot was taken with BV), unless there are several messages depending upon sim personality or something.
Title: Re: Fixing Spelling Errors in Game: An Impossible Dream? Post by: Alex on 2008 March 18, 20:32:53 So, uh... What exactly is going on there? That pop-up is absolutely atrocious! Did they whack some chinese text into babelfish or something?
I agree that the spelling is incredibly infuriating. Reading some of the chance cards make a grammar freak like me want to gouge my eyes out. Title: Re: Fixing Spelling Errors in Game: An Impossible Dream? Post by: Quinctia on 2008 March 18, 23:11:56 Now that I reread it, it looks like a text string that wasn't actually done before the game shipped.
Once in awhile, if I couldn't think of something to title a paper I was writing, I'd put a huge bold title on top: INSERT TITLE HERE. If you look at the end of that box is says: TEMP. Needs to be written for reals. As I am a horrible person who tends to use cutesy made up terms all the time like "for reals," I think that's what's going on here. Sounds like a few different potential lines and then a "Don't forget to finish this!!!!!" note. Which someone forgot to finish. Title: Re: Fixing Spelling Errors in Game: An Impossible Dream? Post by: jsalemi on 2008 March 19, 02:33:07 I was working on a government contract about 10 years ago, and was given a system document done by a different contractor to read to help the government decide if the system was worth still updating or not. About halfway through the document, where obviously a screen shot or the like was supposed to be, was the caption "some shit goes here". I laughed my ass off -- the document was at least 4-5 years old, had been officially delivered to the government agency, and no one (to my knowledge) ever caught that. :)
Title: Re: Fixing Spelling Errors in Game: An Impossible Dream? Post by: BastDawn on 2008 March 19, 06:09:29 I once read a published paperback novel that had the text "insert diagram here" written in bold text between paragraphs. ::)
Title: Re: Fixing Spelling Errors in Game: An Impossible Dream? Post by: Gwill on 2008 March 19, 07:55:56 I accidentally sent a job application where I forgot to change [company name] and some other variable from my form letter. No one complained, but I didn't get called to interview either.
