More Awesome Than You!

Has anybody else found that their sims are WAY more interested in writing in their diaries than they used to be? 

I have a guy whose "natural" hobby is Fitness, and the two hobbies that he's maximized are Arts & Crafts and Cooking.  You'll notice that none of these is Film & Literature.  Yet if I leave him alone for a second, he makes a beeline for the bookcase and writes in his diary till the cows come home.  And he's not low on social, so he's not using it to fill that need; he's just obsessed with his diary.   His wife is writing in her diary a lot more than any sim I saw before FT came out, though she's not quite as obsessive as he is.

Anybody else having this happen?

Yep, yet another thing they'll do until they're near-death.

I'm glad this isn't just me. My sims used to annoy me by writing in their diaries before FT, now they drive me crazy with it. One of them started doing it as his birthday party the other day!

Diaries are for 12s.

I never let my sims alone long enough for them to do this. In my case, they beeline to the ballet bar and the computer.

That darn ballet bar! Any time I put it in a house the whole family swarms to it. I have finally just stuck it in a comm lot gym so they really can only use it when I say so.

The ballet bar has been removed from my homes, as guests beeline for it as well and then take forever and a day to get off of it. 1 Fun my ass, most of my sims lose fun on it. Might be the next best thing to a hot tub for ticket businesses, though.

They really should freaking make the ballet bar more fun if they like it so much.

The reward one, too! What is WITH that thing? One crappy-ass reward...

Yeah, am I right is supposing that the only difference is that they can do ballet exercises on it? Or did I stop using the regular one too early?

All of the new career rewards are "meh" at best. I was playing around with the Intelligence spy gadget thingy and aside from a small boost to fun and social, all I got was a pop-up that said "That sounded like a ghost!" and then the guy put it down. wtf? The koi pond is okay but it reminds me too much of the ponds my daughter has for her Webkinz. Plus the edges on it aren't transparent so it doesn't match the terrain.

I guess people usually run away and cry when you pretend to be fierce and scary.  Personally, I think it's mildly amusing, but then, I have a sense of humor.

Laughing is taboo on MATY?  Don't you find that rather grim?  Personally, I find that there are some days when laughing is the only thing that gets a person through.  I mean, if we didn't laugh at W., we'd all have committed either suicide or murder by now, maybe both.

I'm a clinical psychologist, and when I was in training, one of my interviews for internship was at a place where the interviewer said, "I notice that you've seen a lot of incest survivors.  That's really heavy work -- how do you keep yourself sane?"  And I thought, "Well, she's probably not gonna like this, but it's the truth, so I'll say it anyway."  And I said, "Mostly through a rather dark sense of humor."  And she beamed and said, "Oh, that's good; humor is the best defense against the bad stuff."

Giggling is confined to Retardo Land for a reason.  Humor or not, giggling and your subsequent defense is off-topic and annoying.  Go run along and play.  This is grownup territory.  No 12 allowed.

Humour is very much allowed here.  In fact, it's required for RL.  There are several amusing posts in this thread by regulars.

Well, let me explain how things work here, then. We don't like happy-clappy people. The majority of MATYzens fit into the category of people for whom therapy and rehab do not work because they are too smart and too cynical to go along with it.

And before you start in with the clinical psychology bullshit of telling me that's not a real category, let me get out my street cred for you: my mother is a Psych Professor, and for about 10 years I worked as a research assistant for people who probably wrote the textbooks you used while you were doing your pissy little psych qualification. Go to Retardo Land, start your own thread about how you are so much better than rohina. I am sure nothing bad will happen. After all, you are all brave enough to talk about your patients' private problems in a forum full of hostiles just to prove that you can handle "Teh Dark". What in the world could rohina possibly do against that kind of .... what's the word I am looking for? I am sure I will think of it soon enough.

At any rate: the BBS or Cuppa Joe are really great for people who like to giggle or emoticon their way through conversations. Also they do much more interesting drugs on Cuppa Joe than anybody does at MATY. OH and they *love* to talk about their sex problems, which seems to be something you would be very comfortable with.

Akshully I have noticed the diary obsession. I've never liked the interaction, even in Castaways at the beginning when they're low on social. I would totally support a hack that does away with diarying altogether. But I'd settle for minimisation and be damned grateful for it.

I think it was Dizzy who made a hack that only allowed sims to write in their diaries if they were alone in the room where the bookcase was. He recently posted his hacks on The Laden Swallow (http://www.nectere.net/smf/). It doesn't completely quash the obsessive diary-writing, but it does do away with a lot of it.

I had that. I just haven't put Dizzy's hacks in my Freetime test hood. It still didn't squash it as much as I'd have liked.

I agree that sims are a bit too fond of diary writing since Freetime and choose the most unsuitable situations (shop owner in a shop full of customers) for it, but I would like to point out that diary writing is not only for 12 year olds.
When my grandmother died I took charge of her diaries which she started writing again in 1964, one year after my birth. I loved reading them and they told me a lot about my family and my grandmother. A few years later I got prepared to move and so was my brother, there was a mix-up of boxes and one of mine was accidently driven to a waste plant and burned, including all the diaries up to 1971 (and they were the ones with the most interesting stuff). I still consider this as one of my greatest material losses.
Diaries written by famous or completely unknown people are found and published, because they provide not only a very particular perspective on the time when they were written, but also tell about the person who has written them.

EDIT: Oh, and I think if it gets too much I get the hack from Dizzy, it sound like the right one for me.

I am all for complete removal of the diary writing. They get stuck in the "omg people watching me write ..noooes!!!".

I would be happy for a death to diaries option.  I don't think I have ever intentiionally used it and stomp it whenever I see it.  If I want a sim to park, I can power idle them.  If they are not supposed to park, there are more useful ways to have fun.

I think the diary writing is schtoopid for all the reasons above mentioned and also because no one writes in a diary by hand anymore, anyway. Why aren't these obsessive diary-writers writing blogs?

Because every time they use a computer it is either occupied by another sim or another sim stands next to them and complains because they use it.

I wouldn't mind the autonomous part of diary writing being removed, there are the very rare moments when I may want to direct them to do it just for the heck of it though.  If we take away their diaries what will they obsess over instead?

The diary writing itself doesn't bother me, but the diary writing every spare moment does.  A "less diary writing" option would work well for me.  Honestly, if I have the option between autonomous birdwatching and diary writing, I'd prefer the damn diary.  But it should check to see if the sim is sufficiently alone before permitting the action.

I'm not too sure, but I think Dizzy has a hack for diary writing that checks if the sim is alone. I'll go look.

Don't be fooled. They don't check for aloneness all that hard. They may possibly take a glance around, but in a crowded household this will not really help you decrease the diary writing. Of course in an empty household this is completely useless since they are almost always alone.

Probably not, but after seeing newbie after newbie follow a link here and not understand that the Podium is not a "chat" forum, the locals like to "educate" with sharp and pointy examples.

Don't start a fight with Rohina. Take a few minutes to read the FAQ and understand the culture here. I'm sure you'll be able to fit in nicely (if, in fact, you want to fit in here) once you understand the social dynamics a little better.

No. Think of it this way. You're at a party, and some random guy comes up to you and asks if it hurt when you fell down from heaven. Your reaction to this person is based upon your former experience of guys who use cheesy pick-up lines. Hence, you're going to think of this person as a dork/sleeze until you see something from them to redeem themselves. This is standard behaviour, and something that you should have been able to predict based upon your background.

Not afraid. Newcomers are fun. People who act like 12-year olds are not fun, as we* are no longer 12. Kids piss me off. Damn Entitlement Generation.

Interesting how you ascribe rejection of your inanity to "fear," rather than acknowledging that people might genuinely dislike the way you expressed yourself. PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF AWSOMENESS!!! Could somebody tell me if this obsessive diary writing will be taken care of before I nuke my Sims into space. I just can't wait for the next patch to arrive (I am so impatient lol). This is one of those things I have never understood why it was put into the game in the first place ???. If it was something useful then it would make some sense. I am just getting sick and tired of my adult Sims acting like fourteen year old girls.

The main problem I have about the diary thing (okay, aside from the way some idjit sim will whip it out in the middle of the dorm, then spend the next half hour gasping and smooshing it into their boobs because, "Oh, noes! Mah sekrits!") is that it's so pointless. The motives boost is nominal at best, and they all write the same bloody thing. BBQ grill, teddy bear, random person I spoke to once 3 seasons ago, lawn gnone. Repeat ad nauseam. If they at least wrote about people they actually *know* or were attracted to, or tidbits they'd heard through gossip, it might be vaguely point-ful, but it's the same thing every time.

Ever looked at the "diary"? I repeat my poking of one of my more insane sims, Charisma. "It's an encyclopedia, you freak!"

I had the diary and computer problem before FT came out. I actually have been trying to make non autonomous files that would stop some of the more annoying behaviors, ie writing in the diary or just reading and also with the computers the play, chat and i think a few others. Unfortunatly the computer on just isnt working. I also did the same thing to fridges and tubs and bars. Pretty much anything that would get on my nerves that i couldnt find a hack to fix.

Anti-autonomy is practically an exercise in futility, like an ongoing whack-a-mole. I suggest the allegedly-portable fist approach to things.

Dizzy has a no playing on the computer hack which I use and it seems to work fine, can't remember where it's posted now but I followed a link from this site to find it so a search would probably bring it up.

The problem with no autonomy hacks is that as you squish each action the sims fall back on the next one and that one becomes annoying requiring it to be squished as well so the sims fall back on another and the cycle continues until you might as well just turn free will off. Currently my sims are obsessed with looking at paintings/sculptures/kitchen cabinets etc. to the point where they will do it even if they are about to piss themselves.

They even do that without any anti autonomoy hacks. I noticed the same thing. I had only one sim trying to write his diary in the last few days, while several others suddenly became art critics.

Well, mostly I had a sex-crazed suicidal Servo, but that's a different story.
