More Awesome Than You!

I want useless, ugly, borked and weird holiday themed items!  Any holiday will do, no matter how obscure, and not limited to the wintery ones.  Any class of items, buy mode, build mode, bodyshop or hacks; bring it on!
It's extra fun if you can spot items obviously made by people who have no experience with the holiday in question, like Europeans making Thanksgiving decorations, or Americans trying to honour some obscure Japanese festival, and getting it completely wrong.  Related anecdotes are encouraged.


Judges will be shanghaied along the way, rules might change as we see fit.
And just because an item is technically disqualified doesn't mean you can't post a picture for us to point and laugh at, this goes double for this month, since people are just getting into the festive spirit.

We do? Maybe some countries, but I don't think us Norwegians have anything like Thanksgiving. We have something that's kind of like Halloween, though, insofar as it involves kids in costumes going from door to door and asking for candy. Usually they'll also make an effort to sing a carol first. However, they are usually quite young and often go with their parents, and the costumes are usually cute, and not meant to be scary. No egging or anything, and it's for the days between Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve. It's why some people here are annoyed at Halloween, because they either see it as a threat to this tradition (and an americanization), or as just another excuse for the kids to beg for candy, like one wasn't enough.

I'm mesmerised by the trousers in that last outfit... green and red make for a horrific combination especially where tartan patterns are involved. Why oh why do creators seem to abandon all attempts at realistic shading/colours when using patterned cloth? It's not hard to burn in a shadow texture and tone down the saturation level.

I don't think one could decorate the trash can, because it needs to be mobile. I'm sure this disturbs certain people immensely. But mailboxes are decorated constantly.

You should visit America over Christmas. I recommend Florida for optimal tackiness. You will probably go blind. Most people just put up some lights, a wreath, it's nice. But every few blocks, there's that one house with 14 different glowing Christmas creatures in the front yard, a life-size glowing creche, and 5 different styles of lights, all of them blinking, covering every square inch of property.

And don't forget the increasingly popular blow-up lawn decorations now.  I swear I saw a blow-up nativity creche the other day.

Yeah, honestly, Americans set the bar pretty high for tacky Christmas decoration.  One of my new favorites, because so lazy and ikky, are those colored projector lights.  Insta-sleigh, Santa's house, nativity, whatever you want!

I once suggested to a friend that we should get a projector light of the Virgin Mary, aim it so the light hit a satellite dish, and then count how many cars parked on the lawn in the next twenty-four hours.

Most of the stuff is only moderately fugly but the cart with the pig head!  What the heck is that supposed to be?

If we're talking about xmas lights, I remember this one from last year - or the year before, time accelerates as you age - these lights (http://homepages.xnet.co.nz/~nz_witch/lights.rar) are the only ones I get out for xmas, can't afford the power bills. This guy must have had insane power bills and possibly no family or neighbours left at the end of his mission.  :D

I love that video. The guy who did that is an electrical engineer, I think, and he had the light show play at set times so as not to disturb the neighbors too much. The music was broadcast over the radio during those times. Iirc, the biggest problem was traffic congestion from all the people wanting to see the show.

I once dated a guy who would totally do that. In fact, I would be unsurprised if in a few years, when he has his own house, I stumble upon something like that on the internet with his name attached to it. Engineers are nuts. :D

God In Heaven! What's with all the skanky candy stuff?

That cart actually looks like more of an Easter thing. If that holiday in Norway is like the one in Finland, IIRC, the children come and bless the house a week before Easter, and get money for it? And they leave these little decorated branches with fabric and flowers tied to them. I got to see that last time I visited, it was pretty cool.

As far as Thanksgiving goes- they don't have it in Germany, or Finland, or anywhere else in Europe as far as I could tell when I was living there. Why would the Europeans be celebrating a holiday so specific to the New World? If it involves different traditions and is celebrated on a different day, it is a different holiday (with many similarities, perhaps)! I won't even get into how much trouble it was to put together a Thanksgiving dinner in the student Wohnheim.  :D

I actually like the tackiness of the Christmas decorations, in an odd way. I mean, they are awful, but it is so much fun to drive around and look at all of them... and I remember how much I loved them as a kid (the tackier the better).

What really bothers me is excessive, shitty secular Christmas carols and Christmas decorations in stores before Thanksgiving. One holiday at a time, thanks!

About Thanksgiving: I'm English and we celebrate Guy Fawkes' Night (Mostly now called fireworks night or bonfire night) which celebrates how Guy Fawkes was stopped from blowing up parliament in some ancient century. We make models of him and burn them.

Eurgh. I didn't click on all of them, but the ones I did contained awfully textured clothing. I don't get why so many creators think that block filling a texture with a pattern means they don't have to dodge / burn some shadows and highlights in there. I'm just starting out texturing (nothing good enough to share yet) and even I know the basics  ??? 

No kids come to bless the house, but we do have the decorated branches, if by that you mean a decorated birch-rod. And big plastic candy containers shaped as eggs, and painting real eggs if that floats your boat. People here aren't too much into the Easter bunny, though, so no egg-hunting in gardens. A lot of people go up to their cabins or rent one and go skiing. Or partying. Or both. But most people just stay home or visit relatives. Which is ultimately safer. Every year, quite a few of the skiiers injure themselves, and almost without fail, every year there is a big, televised search-party for someone/a group of people who lost their way in the snow.

(Just like every year, there's a picture in the newspaper of someone who got their eye ruined by someone else's careless use of New Year's Eve rockets. Srsly, alcohol+dimwit+rocket+over-confidence=dimwit blowing off his own or someone else's body-parts from thinking he could fire off a rocket while holding it in his hand ::). When will people learn?)

We're losing 25Gb + every day to people hot-linking without permission, that sort of bandwidth makes a real difference to some of the smaller sites I host, what exactly gives you the right to make that even just a little bit worse?

FYI: These cows have obviously been decorated for the so-called "Almabtrieb (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Almabtrieb)", the day when the cattle is brought down from the alpine pastures to spend the winter in the barns. I don't think this is celebrated anywhere else than in the rural areas of Southern Germany, Austria and Swiss (I might be wrong, of course), but the decoration, although poorly made, is at least somewhat authentic.

I don't disagree with your point about people stealing your bandwidth, that's fair enough, it's yours, you pay for it, but 25GB or more a day for IMAGES? I think not. Surely that's your entire site traffic, if anything, and even that seems astronomical.

I rather like some of the supposedly "tacky" yet well-made stuff.  We've never been over-the-top decorators (we can barely afford the electric bills as it is) but when I was younger my mother went all out: 4 Christmas trees (1 live one), colored lights lining the roof and sidewalk, a plastic nativity, giant blow-up santa, and little red bows tied to anything that stayed still long enough to have one tied on.  And for a little kid that was fun, so I don't mind big christmas bauble earrings or giant pieces of plastic candy so much now, and several of my sims have caught the decorating bug too. :)

Celebrated on the 13th of December. In honour of St. Lucia. Nowadays, at least here in Norway, it's only small kids who do this parade-thing and sing the Lucia-song, and that's mostly because some adult makes them. (Thinking it will be oh so cute and sweet, and not about how every girl will want to be Lucia and how all the boys will hate every bit of it).

The Swedes are the ones that are really into it, though.

@Kate-  Somewhere, on an obscure forum many, many light years ago, someone posted a direct link to your site.  This link was in reference to some very craptastic clothing.  I still checked your site out and found some of the most unique and useful flooring.  Almost all of my simmies' homes have parsimonious flooring in at least one room.  Many outside paths and driveways come from your site.  I, in turn, have commented on the wonders of parsimonious flooring and recommended them highly on other forums (though without direct links).  IMHO, any advertising is good advertising.  I always check out links for utter shite because you never know when you will find a gem while cruising around.  Bandwidth aside, traffic is good, yes?

Because the rubber is really soft, they wobble disturbingly.

If you are in the states and have HGTV, they have a show that airs at random times called "What's Up With That House?" which, naturally, takes you inside some unusual homes, like those built into cliffs or caves, or whatever. There is a holiday special called "What's Up With That Christmas House?" and I think California and Florida won the "HOLY SHIT!" awards for most elaborate. In fact, one of the segments makes a point of showing the "FOR SALE" sign in the yard of the house directly across the street. LOL

And yes, one of the houses is the one mentioned, and their pirate radio station is KOLD, accessible on your car radio as you stop and rubberneck.

I do agree that advertising is good up to a point - what I object to is someone ripping us to shreds AND stealing our bandwidth AND being fucking ignorant about it. And there isn't really any advantage to us in additional advertising *here* - because any visitors that do go to the site are likely to only visit once only just to gawp, so we're not picking up regular traffic from people who are going to  use the site for its intended purpose.  In that respect there's really no incentive for me to do anyone here a favour of allowing them to link to the pictures, since its done for the collective entertainment of MATY members and not for any purpose that might do us any good. All of that aside, if someone had *bothered* to ask then yeah, no problem, even if it is just to take the piss. That's not true. I've gone to gawp AND snag stuff before. If your content isn't all "More Awful Than You", and it really isn't, given that while some people who don't share your sense of taste nominate you, you never actually win, the less-than-popular may as well be considered an advertisement for that which is more in line with people's tastes. Hot-linking to zips is a non-problem. Keep in mind that if you made people ACTUALLY VIEW THE ENTIRE CRAPPY PAGE just to get the zip file they want, they would chew up MORE of your bandwidth. Since hotlinked zips are never inadvertantly loaded by those who are merely passing by the page, only by those who have intentionally clicked the download link, it means these are people who really DO want those files. If they want to eat those files in a low-budget, no-fluff form, why not? That's my view of the matter. I encourage people to hotlink zips. It keeps those stupid noobs off my forum and lets them have their file without chewing up php cycles. It's a non-issue, and you'd do best to just ignore and chalk it up as being a regular download. No browser automatically grabs zips linked on random pages. Images are the real issue because they can be used in ways that have nothing at all to do with your site.

JMP, I can see the advantages of keeping people away from the site, but we don't have any visitor involvement aside from our guest books, so it doesn't make any difference whether people are stupid and irritating or not. What does make a difference is if they view the pages they also view the ads so I'm more likely to get paid for the traffic, a lot of international traffic doesn't pay anything but some chance of getting something is still better than none at all! Unlike MTS2 we're not taking in $3000+ a month in subscriber fees, so its gotta come from somewhere.

I did something like that once.  Unfortunately I forgot to remove all the original images from my own site.

No Kelly-but right clicking and copying the original url to the image is. It is called hotlinking. In general opinion it is ok to do that to a paysite, but not to a freesite.

I know there has been some kind of European tradition like thanksgiving, but it's more like an autumn festival, mostly celebrated in places with a lot of agriculture.  Which explains why we don't have it in Norway; it doesn't take a whole festival to say "Oh, great! More fucking potatoes."

I remember there was some sort of harvest thanksgiving festival at church when I was a kid and forced to go to Sunday school. It was around the end of summer, beginning of autumn. I think we used to take some edible goods along for redistribution amongst the poor.

You mean the Harvest Festival? That's always around the end of August/beginning of September. It's a religious festival to give thanks for the food we eat (I suppose there might be more agricultural references in rural areas, but where I live it tends to be a celebration of food in general). In my town we always brought food which was displayed in the church just before and during the service, and afterwards it's distributed to local charities, often the homeless shelter that the crap city council doesn't want to support. :P

I don't think ANYTHING is supporting them, and the purpose of the top is not really "support" at all, but simply to avoid indecency. Not that the outfit can be considered decent. Fortunately, boobs don't fall off merely because nothing supports them.

The tendrils look like plastic springs (in fact, they remind me strangely of comb binders).  Also, they fall bizarrely from the bottom of the bun.  It's obviously not animated, either.

I find the model even more disturbing than the trousers. She must have conehead DNA to get a forehead that high and the scowl is worthy of Pescado.

It's also by Chaz, which means the textures all look like the Sim got very bad highlights. The brown appears to have green streaks in it.

Hey, that chick isn't bad. I like the scowl and forehead. Eyes a little TOO close together, though.

I'm this close to creating a special hell dimension for bad Townies.  It will be forever winter and they will be forced to wear those clothes and walk past decorated cows for the rest of their simmie lives ...  Jan Tellerman will eternally walk around with that candy cane stuck to her bum. 

All these threads tend to inspire me with those kinds of feelings, but this one is a bit extra special.

That was quite awesome (I don't want to see his electric bill either). And yes he was "shut down" in 2005 within a week after a his display caused a traffic accident.
Certainly not my (as a former  European) idea of christmas.
 But I sure give him credits for making the "Trans Siberian Orchestra" known to me  ;D

I, however, would LOVE a disembodied cheerleader, llama mascot, and cow mascot head to spring forth from my sims' wall.

I think TJ has a mounted cow mascot head which makes other cow mascots run off the lot in terror. Don't think he's made mounted heads of the other two annoying NPCs though.

Actually windkeeper made it (mesh and texture), but TJ was the one who hacked it and added the options.  I use it in all dorms.

I could see this for bars and sims' homes. Trophies such as these exist IRL, but I don't remember if or where I have seen them. However, the wooden plaque base is missing. That aside, I don't see what this has to do with Christmas, apart from the fact the set is shown with stuff from Holiday Crap. I must say that desk made me tip my head sideways and frown, though. I must investigate.

True, deer head trophies exist, but usually they're mounted on something.  It's quite odd to see nothing but the head.  I mean, how's it hanging on the wall?

Are you sure it's a reindeer? The antlers look more like a stag's... And yes, it definitively lacks a trophy plate - perhaps, it's doweled to the wall.

I love to see people react that way to reindeer.
In this part of the world reindeer are mostly domesticated and used as food.  A few years ago my parents served Reindeer roast on Christmas Eve.  I had great fun shockiing Americans about that.

Isn't reindeer meat really tough? I read that somewhere, but I've never eaten it as we don't get it in Britain.

Re: the floating head, minus a plaque it reminds me of the moose-head from sims 1. I made my sims form an entire religion around it. It used to droop its antlers and make a really creepy noise if the overall mood of the family was too low!

We had reindeer pizza at this little pizza place with sawdust strewn floors a while back.. Not bad. Not great.. but not bad. I imagine it'd taste better as a roast, though. This was reindeer sausage and I think the pizza was overcooked.

I could imagine that reindeer tastes very similar to game?

It hasn't - the creator states explicitly that all holiday decoration is EAxis stuff. Without it, it's just a bedroom. No valid entry, imho.

It tastes like venison.  It's not particularily tough, but it does have that wild game taste that people raised on beef can find a bit unusual.

As for whether the head mounted in the picture is a deer or a raindeer, I'd say the fur looks like reindeer, but the shape of the head and the antlers look like a deer.  And since reindeer run in massive herds of hundreds of animals, killing one isn't exactly a feat worthy of a trophy.
As an aditional bit of reindeer trivia (since I'm apparently our resident expert): Both male and female reindeer have antlers.

Reindeer are tasty.
