Well, if you're running into the error WITHOUT, then that's a purely Maxis codestack, unless you have something NON-AWESOME there. So you probably pulled a Ness. No one else has reported this.

If I create NPCs using the dead tree thingy, then they are hirable no problems.

While ever the game tries to spawn an NPC through phone use, it gives me the invalid species error.  Including calling for emergency services, but NOT pizza delivery!

I've also found that an adult sim has macro socialise romantic available on a teen sim, when there's never been anything in my game to enable that.  Something is royally borked up here!

Just wanted to add some things, since I took part in the troubleshooting discussion: these findings came in a hood that had previously been DAC-treated, and the remains cleared with SimPE. I suspect one or the other are the cause for this mischief. Maybe that's why no one else has reported this issue either.

In OFB, DAC breaks the townie generator.
It is not inconceivable that as of Pets it breaks the NPC generator.
