I am a fan of Paint Shop Pro 8 Studio. Mostly because it includes somthing called "Picture Tubes". A paintbrush like object where you can drop in flames, lighting bolts, candy, and cheese  . Automaticly! Pluse it has a macro that repates opreations for all open windows. Very usefull for recoloring |

I have PSP9 sitting on my drive from a time ago when graphics were important (lost the feel for it). Adobe is generally more professional-acquainted, but PSP was the first real image editing suite I learnt from and makes my choice. Has anyone tried out the version 10/X of Paint Shop Pro? It looks like Jasc got borged by Corel, 'eck.  |

PSP, v6 (v7 for certain features). Other programs are too cluttered up with crap and seem to be designed by cruel, sadistic people.
I have v10, but haven't installed it. Saw it, though. I hate Corel, so...

I don't know what an image editimg program is... However I currently use Adobe Photoshop for my image editing needs. I also enjoy Corel Painter for extra flair. And who doesn't love a good Wacom tablet to go along with all that? Ivy |

Adobe Photoshop CS2 for general image editing and Macromedia Fireworks 8 when using a tablet. I haven't found a good Vector-only program though.
PSPX is horrible compared to other versions, you're probably better off even getting the GNU Image Manipulation Program or Adobe Photoshop Elements 5. Load times are about as slow as Photoshop CS2, and for some reason it hides the color picker.

Adobe Photoshop CS2 just has so many features that nothing else comes close, but a lot of people say the thing's really bloated and has features that many people wouldn't use. I doubt a lot of people even know about Vanishing Point or the Soft Repair functions that came with CS2, nor would they use them a whole lot even if they did know.
GIMP's pretty good, although I haven't used it a whole lot. It's free and has more features than some of the $100 packages out there but I really, really hate the name.

I have tried pretty much everything and I always go back to PS CS, its my graphics editor of choice. When I first started out fooling around with graphics I tried all the free ones and by far the best I found was Serifs Photoplus, in fact I still use it at work since they dont give us a graphics editor.

I use Micrografx Picture Publisher 8. Mainly because it's the one I've always used (since 4.0 anyway). I don't think it's as powerful as Photoshop, and it lacks a bit in layers, but I've been using it so long that I know how to fake it.  |

I use Irfanview and ImageMagick .. not as nifty as GIMP but both are easier to use .. layering doesn't make sense to me so until it "clicks" I gave up on GIMP. Prolly why I have so much trouble with Simpe .. docking etc doesn't quite tickle the correct neurons and I give up in frustration. Both of my favs are free .. I use Irfanview on my desktop and I use ImageMagick online: http://studio.imagemagick.net/MagickStudio/scripts/MagickStudio.cgi and http://www.irfanview.com/ IM can be downloaded but I couldn't get it to work back then.. maybe I should try again now that I understand my pc more. ~misty |

I tried GIMP. Didn't like it at all. It produced artifacts when editing images, pixels didn't move around the way they should, etc., etc.
In terms of results quality, Photoshop is really way, way above any of the other editing programs, although I do grant that PSP is a gazillion times easier to use. I've tried everything else, but eventually I had to go back to the Photoshop I "obtained from a friend".
