University Life. Can't rent or move into any lot. I click the check and nada.

I am not sure what the problem is. I have a house with 2 sims living in it, and I decided to send one of them off to college. I get the loading screen, followed by the cut scene, and the game tells me to choose a place to stay for the term. I pick a dorm and click [rent], and it tells me I can move in or choose another place. I click the check icon to start, but nothing happens. The check icon goes grey, and I can't do anything. The game isn't really frozen as far as I can tell, but it won't move on from this point no matter how long I wait. And since there is no option to quit or go back to the main menu, I have to alt tab out and kill the game through task manager. I have tried cleaning out the usual .package files but this doesn't do anything. The problem persists no matter what. I have searched high and low for a workaround, and all I've been able to find that may work is simply moving the sims to a new/different town, or just exporting them and placing a copy in a new game. But that seems highly inconvenient, especially when I go to send the other sim off to college when they're ready.
So has anyone else ran into this annoying crap, and is there a simple solution? A file to delete? Will I have to reinstall? Which EA employee should I punch in the face?

My Google-Fu led me to this. I don't know if it will work, but it's worth a shot.
