THANKS THIS IS GREAT

I am playing a challenge where I can only control one sim throughout her life - even if she gets married I can't control her husband.  I therefore would like to choose a partner who already has a real job (and will hopefully keep it).   Are consignment specialst and fitting room guard proper careers?

you know, to be safe, I'd choose someone who has a career in one of the original fields that didn't get monkeyed with by Ambitions. - political, business, military, athletic are the ones that I've played that play just as before installing Ambitions.

It's just so difficult to find partners in the game, and these two are about the only suitable ones she knows and who respond to her... sigh...

Well never mind I guess she can support them both if needs be.

Consignment specialist is the consignment store clerk - it's not a real career and will get dropped when the sim enters active family. Fitting room guard is "real", but it's a part-time job.

I wouldn't bother inviting said husband, then. If you can't control him, he's useless and you may as well leave him where he is.

Ok I am happy enough with a fitting room guard as a husband... but he has the "ambitious" trait.  He's gonna get rather moody if I can't help him get a better job.

That's why they call them "challenges".

Do they have to get married? Why not just use him as a sperm donor?

I worked something out - he doesn't have to progress in his job, he gets gratification from increasing skills too.  I bought him an easel and every time he gets restless I will sell his last painting and let him skill up on that.

I've been meaning to try this in one of my games, too - create a self-sim and only ever play her and no one else. I never thought to start out as a toddler, though! I tend to get bored easily, however, and expect I'd better try this with aging on normal speed or I might not get very far. heh.

I think it might be easiest to try to get to know other potential mates while still in high school. If you could get the sims to be gf/bf, then they could marry when they both age up. Otherwise I would probably try hanging out at one of the rabbit holes in the afternoon and try to start conversations with the sims who come out and take it from there. But it sounds like you have found a way to keep your consignment clerk sim happy so that works, too.

It's probably best not to invite him in. An uncontrolled sim is worthless and adds nothing but annoyance, so it's best to kick him out.
