Food Eats You, but not children, it seems...

THANKS THIS IS GREAT

Hunting around for info on this, I found this post:
My hungry kids aren't grabbing from inventory. Morty Roth had hamburgers in his inventory and the little boy was basically starving. No macro>eat option on the pie menu. I had to get him to eat cookies or die! (okay, be taken by SS but it didn't sound as good)

I had everything on-lot that I needed, Macro and FEY-wise.

I have the same thing going on.  I have macrotastics and FEY running on the lot, but sim-6s will run hunger bars down into the red and trigger the "ur a bad parent - feed ur kidz!!11" message.  There is food in parents' inventories, and parents will macro-eat, but the children will not.  On school days, they seem to refuel at school, but on weekends, they starve unless I make a parent prepare a meal and serve it.  Is this normal behaviour or am I doin' it wrong?

I had to take FEY out as this was pissing me off totally. Pescado ignores any error/bug report I make because he is a buttcheek. Maybe he'll take notice of yours, mate. Wink

Kids eat fine with just Macrotastics installed, although it lets the hunger bar go extremely low before allowing them to grab any inventoried food. I don't get the SS warning 'feed your chilluns' with it though.

Food Eats You simply stomps autonomous fridge behavior. Since children cannot cook, they never really touch the fridge and thus apparently don't trigger the sign. Taking out the sign has no effect on anything, since the sign only fires when a sim tries to access the fridge. I have tried tweaking the child-advertisements on the sign so that they might pick it autonomously, but taking out the sign does absolutely nothing since children still cannot use the fridge on their own. STUPID EMMA!

Oh, so it is macro>eat that is trying to starve the sim-kids then?

No, the kids simply naturally starve on their own because they do not have the ability to eat, and are not picking anything to eat or Macro-Eat. This is just EAxis behavior at work. It has nothing to do with Food Eats You, as Food Eats You *IS* child enabled and WOULD push macro-eat on them...if they had either chosen to interact with the fridge or the sign itself. I have tweaked the sign-ads to make it more likely kids will pick it.

I'll give it another go then. I'm sick of having to supplement sim-kids' diets with cookies.

Okay, I'll just damn well have the parents feed the kids then.

It's a bit of a gap though - infants and toddlers get managed by the baby controller and get their green liquid regularly.  Teens and adults auto or macro eat from food in inventory.  Children seem to be the great testing ground.  Survive childhood, and you can survive anything.

I may be being stupid here, but this is how I feed the kids. Before the kids are born/when they are toddlers, I make a fair few amount of group meals and just stock them in the fridge as leftovers. Kids can then help themselves. Is that any use to you?

That's a good idea. For some reason, I also have this problem - I sometimes can't make children Macro>Eat. Sometimes they won't take things from their parents' inventories, and also, sometimes it doesn't show up under the Macro menu at all.

I usually make a few snacks for the kids for when they get home. (I stash the nanny off underneath the foundation or the attic or something.) I keep them put away using leftovers. It's funny; I've had a group meal of lobster thermidor (or an equivalent clone) last an entire family DAYS using leftovers.

You know what would be cool? If children didn't get the free food upon going to school unless they had a plate of food in their inventory, same with adults. That would rock. And perhaps for jobs and private school, if they DIDN'T, but their hunger got low, it would cost money, since they're going to the cafeteria or out to lunch or something.

No, not stupid at all.  That's what I have to do as well, only I understood that with FEY, you could make many and everything gets stocked in inventory.  Sims would macro-eat from inventory automagically, rather than access the fridge.  I understand that this does not work for children (and even understand why to some extent), and am somewhat amused by this.

I disagree.  Mind you, I don't actually care about school fee hacks or 20K handouts either.  I have no problem with the "social democratic institution" of feeding kids at school. My issue is that I don't want the sim kids to starve while I'm busy doing something important/interesting over on the other side of the lot (like cowplanting one of their parents).

I don't know if it's related, but kids can't eat food from platters that haven't been "served" yet.  Or at least, they couldn't the last time I tried it, which was a couple of expansions ago.  Try serving a plate before storing the food?

Unrelated: Macrotastics automatically compensates for this bug.

Yes, I suppose you're right, from a gameplay point of view. I guess it would be cool, but it would get old after a while. Socialism wins again!

And as long as we're on the topic of "probably wouldn't work out well, but might be cool anyhow", what do you think of Communist Sims? Food eats you, on a whole new level!

Yeah, my ideas suck.

It's SUPPOSED to work, but since it's a passive functionality that only becomes active when a sim autonomously accesses the fridge, children may not choose to touch the fridge.

Also, a lot of people panic prematurely about the food thing, much like EAxis does. There's a second hook on FEY that will fire at some point, assuming the sign is not locked up in a place that is inaccessible like the fridge should be. Fridge in kitchen, locked, FEY outside in the dining room, is the recommended config.

You know what would be cool? If children didn't get the free food upon going to school unless they had a plate of food in their inventory, same with adults. That would rock. Well, it's obvious how they get food at work: By mooching! Doesn't everyone manage to mooch free office snacks? Heck, the food is probably one of the benefits there, so it's only natural that your sim scarfs up free food. As for school food, hey, kids have recess. Presumably, the school has a playground. That's like an all-you-can-eat buffet right there. I know it was when *I* was a kid. Mmm. Squirrel.

I think they fill only half a kid's hunger bar, which keeps them from starving, but not all day.  At least they play with the e-z-bake oven (for want of the actual name of the object) autonomously.

I find now that a lot of townies will autonomously grill things on comm lots.  My sim kids will often scrounge while at the playground if some other sim has hot dogs on the go.

Of course, it is unclear how you got them to GO there in the first place, since they don't have a walk to option and cannot drive or summon taxis.

They go with a parent - if parent goes, the "walk-to-lot" provides an option to take along other family members.

How do kids in little awesomeland get to the playground to steal each others' lunch money?

It's a community lot. There are screenshots which depict customer loyalty stars. Presumably, it's customer-controlled to only allow kids and is owned by someone else.
