THANKS THIS IS GREAT

I have nothing to add to this little chat, because I think everyone's basically covered it, except your username, Jerseygirl-ninety-thousand-zeros, is false advertising. You are NOT from Jersey. Try again, PAL. You're from NEW Jersey.

Thank you.

~ Someone from REAL Jersey, who finds it offensive that New Jerseyans call themselves "Jersey", such to the extent that when she says she's from Jersey, people automatically she means New Jersey, which is NOT true.
(By the way, we may be a small British island, but we OWN you.)

I suspect witch could write a best-seller about relationships if she could only be bothered to do so.

It's almost always enlightening to examine your current S.O.'s former relationships and whether s/he gets along well with them. If s/he has not managed to remain friends with any, and says nothing but negative things about them, the truth is that the problem is logically with your S.O. and when you figure this out and break up, you will join their ranks and be described in the same way.

It is also enlightening to examine how s/he gets on with his/her mother, especially if your S.O. is a guy. If they don't get along at all, any negative attitude about Mom is going to get applied to women in general. If they are "too" close, no woman will ever measure up to good ol' Mom, or get support from the S.O. when Mom is wrong. Women do the same with Dad (their attitude towards Dad sets the tone for their attitude about guys in general), and many tend to look and act more like their moms as they get older.

Some other truths:

1. People don't change dramatically from the way they are when you first start dating...except for the worse. If they are cheap, rude to service people, mysogynistic, bad with money, unfaithful, drunk, reckless drivers, bad dressers, tacky, addicted to anything, lazy, messy, argumentative, egotistical, hyper-religious, or whatever, keep in mind that they are sti trying to win you over and impress you when you first start dating, and if you accept bad behaviors then, thinking you can "fix" or "change" them, you are a fool.

2. How people treat their superiors and inferiors (bosses on one hand, servers on the other) is enlightening. If there's a vast difference, run.

3. Thrill seekers will get bored with you and cheat, or try drugs, or generally act like bored children at some point in your relationship.

4. The same advice about listening carefully when they talk about former S.O.s applies also to jobs, especially if they don't seem to keep one for long. If it is (supposedly) never their fault they got fired, then they are lying.

5. It is better to be single than stupid. If you ignore your common sense when dating, you are being stupid, and you will earn exactly what you get.

None of the above is earth-shatteringly new advice. I'm sure my great-great-grandmother was told similar things by HER mother. Only the very young and/or arrogant think that common sense guidelines don't apply to THEM and then get angry and defensive about it.

So? I personally believe that the same principles apply to both marriages and long term dating. How do you think people end up married? They date, get to know each other, find what makes them tick and THEN they get married.

Unless they are Britney Spears...or are very lucky in their choice of partner.

Well, consider the source. Jamie'sGranny has a pretty narrow and traditional view of these things.

As far as crazy-ass lurker with the weird boyfriend is concerned: do you always barge into new places and start bumping chests aggressively with the first person you see? Because around here, that kind of behaviour is likely to get your HEAD eaten.

It is interesting that the only snarky comment was directed towards witch and not the actual advice. You'd think that a dose of common sense would act like Kryptonite...maybe it was like the Far Side cartoon "what dogs hear."

Common sense common sense witch common sense blah blah blah common sense.

Probably stopped dead right there to take an hour or two to think of a scathing insult especially for witch.

About 2 seconds worth of thought, considering it's a Charlie Brown quote.

Another few minutes to phrase the original reaction in a way that wasn't the very personal 'and how many ex's are you up to now' - intended as a slight generosity which ya'll are running roughshod over very well indeed.

> Jamie'sGranny has a pretty narrow and traditional view of these things.

Do I now? That's interesting.

Didn't you Soup? Also, as a rule, anyone with ANY exes is damaged goods with a history of leaving loose ends around. Not someone you want a relationship with.

Xaviera Hollander

Didn't know she was Dutch, but she is or was semi-famous in the US for her books ages ago. (When I was too young to be reading them, but read them anyway, actually.)

Anyhow, where does this boyfriend FIND these psycho exes?  Where did he find you?  My money is on "same sort of place/event/situation".  I'm thinking he's someone with a definite MO.
If this boyfriend of yours has a host of psycho exes, I think this says more about you than it does about him.

Ah, but what you're missing in the writing is how it's pronounced in these parts -- it's pronounced 'joisey'.  We wouldn't be caught dead pronouncing that 'r'. Smiley
