SecuROM question: Neverwinter Nights 2
« on: 2008 February 26, 21:24:47 »
THANKS THIS IS GREAT

So, my husband wanted to buy NWN2 the other day and I stopped him because I had heard that Obsidian used SecuROM on it. He still wants to play it (I do too) but neither one of us want to mess with getting SecuROM again considering all the hoops we jumped through to get rid of it the first time. I had also heard that Obsidian claimed? to not know about the dangers of using SecuROM, and were going to get rid of it?

Did they ever manage that? Or is ARRing a copy the only way to be SecuROM free?

Neverwinter Nights 2 uses SecuROM, but it's not the aggressive version that Eaxis uses. It's similar to the one in Titan Quest, it does put stuff in your registry, but it removes itself when you uninstall the games and I never experienced any problems. I reinstalled NWN2 shortly after cleaning the computer from the BV mess and removed it a couple of weeks back, checked for SecuROM files and everything was still okay.

That said, the ARR version is probably the best bet if you don't want SecuROM anywhere near your computer.

If you want to patch, say hello to SecuRom. Last I knew, the latest no-cd doesn't go up to the current NWN2 version. You know how Atari likes to patch in tiny little stages, over and over and over. However, I too have NWN2 flavor SecuRom, gotten after I killed EA flavor. It's been playing nice, so I've let it live.

Does that include player created patches? (Assuming that there are some, there are for BGII)

And boo-hiss for them not having a crack for the patched version. =p

No, its fine for player created mods. Just NWN patches. Be warned, their patches are huge.

The online patcher often crashed for me. I found a utility that allowed you to patch offline.

The downloadable patches are here.
Weird. The page loaded for me the first time, then I kept getting redirected to an Ozzie site. Not sure what's going on.

Offline patcher here

The patcher didn't work for me when I queued the patches, I had to do them one at a time.

Make sure to RTFM

Why does EAxis continue to use the aggressive version of SecuROM when there is a nicer version of it?

Am I asking a question I already know the answer to?

Because of their heavy dealings with Sony. You know, the company that installed rootkits on the PSP.

Amazon lists Valve's Portal (for PCs) due out in April as being an EA product as well, so I suppose I won't be buying it, thanks to SecuROM boycotting. Argh.
