I think you have a great list so far!

The only names that would really annoy me are "Hiawatha" & "Jan" as male first names.  I would consider both of those names to be female.

I simply glanced at the suggested names by other posters; so, forgive me if I repeat a name or two.

I'd like to see a few more common names thrown in there:
Bethany, Jessica, Phoebe & Heather for females - I also like Faith, Whitney & Zoe mentioned by others
Chase, Richard, Fred, Jason & Stan for males - I also like Wyn or Wynn, Julian & Simon mentioned by others

For the last names, I'd love to see some more names added that are potential puns like:
Worth, Cash, Tard, Moore, Gates, Payne, Balls, Love, Hart, Torn, Labor, Justice, Starr, Butts

Hippy names that I like:
Aura, Lyric, Sunshine, Rainbow, Rayne, Storm, Nirvana, Fantasy, Spirit, Promise, Freedom, Hope, Breezy, Starlight, Jazz, Joy, Moonshine, Hawk, Trinity, Journey, Skye & Blossom

Hiawatha and Jan Van Eyck would be rather surprised to hear you say that Tongue.

I get lots of names from http://www.zoope.com/about/about_names.html.

Depends where you are really.  Hiawatha was a male Indian, and is considered the founder of the Iroquois Confederacy (so that we might all have black market ciggies).
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hiawatha

Jan, in North America Jan is often short for Janet, which would be female.  However, in Holland or Germany, Jan is a complete name, and most often (if not always) male (pronounced Yan).

In other areas of the world, I am sure that they are popular, well-accepted male names and that is why they are on the list; however, they annoy me all the same.

Right, I've attended 3 graduations this week and one of the ways I entertained myself was by checking out good sim names in the programmes.  Grin

I'm not going to double-check every name in this thread, so there may be repeats.

Female:
Melissa, Adele, Tania, Aroha, Leah, Hera, Apii, Jesse, Bronwyn, Sheree, Charlotte, Kayla, Joyce, Dale, Holly, Tara, Erin, Estelle, Pamela, Janine, Lauren, Aynsley, Hannah, Amy, Chloe, Renee, Caitlin, Lucy, Karen, Joanna, Rhoda, Veronica, Chelsea, Lillian, Yvonne, Candita, Jade, Jessica, Vanessa, Tammy, Barbara, Jennifer, Briar, Charmaine, Olivia, Meagan, Breanne, Monique, Samantha, Stacey, Kirsty, Julia, Lynette, Claire, Mandy, Justine, Annabella, Rosie, Linda, Alicia, Laura, Morgan, Wendy, Esme, Celeste, Michelle, Rachel, Gail, Susan, Joy, Suzanne, Natasha, Natalie, Martha, Paige, Aleisha, Trish, Jill, Roseanne, Tatiana, Erin, Maureen, Penny, Kitty, Lorraine, Grace, Brenda, Beverly, Julie.

Male
Stefan, Caleb, Evan, Jared, Jamie, Michael, Justin, Brett, Kane, Daniel, Lennie, Dale, Lucas, Tim, Jaime, Lesley, Noel, Brendan, Rick, Jaspar, Aroha, Andrew, Gary, Liam, Ben, Greg, Joe, Wendon, Brent, Carl, Scott, Eugene, Luke, Neville,  Wayne, David, Mark, Tyrone, Lee, Tony, Simon, Troy, Richard, Gareth,  Daryl, Aaron, Clifton, Doug, Fred, Cliff, Lyall, Ray, Ken.

Some of these are short versions and could be included as both long and short, like Tony / Anthony.

I've been going through a lot of names in alphabet order, since I've been doing a legacy challenge and naming each generation by a letter (I also added random sim names of these letters I found while going through the names I used):

B
Female:  Baye, Bielle, Bryce
Male:  Blane, Brand

C
Female:  Caitlyn, Cari, Carmen, Cera, Ciera, Cora
Male:  Carter, Cayden, Chase, Ciel, Clarence, Clive, Clynt, Cove, Craig, Chris

D
Female:  Dahlia, Daphne, Darla, Deirdre, Delia, Diana
Male:  Derin, Diego, Drake

E
Female:  Elayna, Eleanor, Eliza, Emmy, Emony, Erin, Esther, Eve
Male:  Edgar, Elim, Elliot, Erick

F
Female:  Farrah, Fawn, Faye, Felicia, Fiona, Florence, Fran
Male:  Ferris, Fletcher, Flint

G (shortlist of names I'm going to pick from)
Female:  Gayle, Gina, Genevieve, Gwen
Male:  Garret, Gavin, George, Glenn

I tend to go to random name generator sites when I'm "making" townies.  (Since I can't just generate non-Maxis downtownies, it seems, I go to CAS, I hit randomize, and use a randomizer for names and asps and stuff.)  I don't mind ethnic names, in fact, my pasty white blonde guy with the name of Olympiodoros Abd-Al-Atif was one of my favorite downtownies.

I can see how Jan would be confusing, but it is a very common boys name in numerous Eastern European countries, I think as a version of "John."

But Hiawatha is from the United States, not "some other country." There are numerous legends about him, as "the peacemaker," the "rainbow man," and, I believe, as the constellation many of us know as Orion (ooh, Orion- also a good name I like to use for my alien sims). There's also a ballad/poem about a fictional Hiawatha by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. So no, definitely not a girls name, and one I plan on keeping.

I'd be happy with Jan as a boy's name. Other names that can be used for either sex include Kelly, Robin, Marion, Jamie and Jessie. But of course you're not going to be able to please everyone; I absolutely hate "Aura, Lyric, Sunshine, Rainbow, Rayne, Storm, Nirvana, Fantasy, Spirit, Promise, Freedom, Hope, Breezy, Starlight, Jazz, Joy, Moonshine, Hawk, Trinity, Journey, Skye & Blossom" for instance. Of that list, I went with Lyric, Nirvana (for a last name), Trinity, Hawk, Joy, Skye, and already liked Hope. I debated Jazz but it sounds awfully close to something else and then I couldn't think about it as a boy's name any other way.

The list of names is getting pretty long now. I wonder if I should double a few of the most common names, like John and Michael, to make them show up more often? I mean, in real life it's kind of like, "throw a stone, hit a John."

Hehe.

Yes, but the real world is filled with thousands upon thousands of people in each city (small towns notwithstanding), and I would hope that your Sims hood is not. It's up to you, though.

Okay! Round two is up! For those of you interested, I now feel that the list is long enough. But some of the names are kind of questionable, and I am trying to decide which of them to delete, and looking at the balance between common names and odd ones.

I vote for vetoing Ianthorpe to make room for just plain ole Ian. Also, Fraser should have an i. If only because I like Kelsey Grahamer (sp?)

Ianthorpe isn't on the list, but I do have Ian for a male first name. Do you mean I should use Ianthorpe as a last name? Anyway, you'll notice I updated the lists in the first few posts to show what I currently have.

Some of the male names I am currently chewing over and wonder if I should keep:

Arash (a rash?), Androcles, Baldur, Blue, Frost (better as a last name?), Godwyn, Icarus, Ingman, Keme, Kotori, Moi, Mustapha, Nakamo (does this sound too feminine?), Oz, Odin, Orpheus (too strong a reference/distracting?), Qasim & Qamar, Star, Shadow, Truth, Tobias (Toby?), Tyree (ethnicity of name too obvious to work for a randomly generated white sim?), Wapasha, Winoc, Yefim, and Zan.

Questionable female first names: Aponi, America, Andromeda, Columbine, Deserét, Ebony, Genesis, Hera, Hortense, Kenya, Mbala, Martha, Nova, Rayen (too much like Raven?), Shadi, Sanuye, Solstice, Wilma, Xanthe, Zhen, and Zuri.

For last names, the main concerns are with punctuation/spelling and capitalization. For example, is it Leclere, LeClere, or Le Clere? I couldn't tell from looking at the census data since they "normalized" everything in the list.

Sorry, I was looking at a list of names in someone else's post.  Roll Eyes Hur.

As for "Leclere" I'd go with "Le Clere."

Godwyn and Ingman, to me, sound like surnames, while Qasim, Qamar and Odin are too much of a distraction. I do like Orpheus though.  From the girls names you've highlighted, I'm not sure about Sanuye, Mbala or Deseret - if only because I have no idea how to pronounce them in my head. That problem exists for a few of the surnames too.

Going from your questionable lists, I would remove the following:

Males: Arash (you're right: a rash), Androcles, Blue (unless his last name is Daboodeedabodah), Frost and Ingman (I agree; both are better as surnames), Keme, Moi (the french would consider him a narcissist), Nakamo (too similar to the japanese word Nakama, in my view), Qasim & Qamar and Tyree (too ethnic for a random white townie sim, yes), Wapasha, Winoc, and Yefim (I just don't like these last three).

Females: Columbine (for obvious reasons, I should hope), Deserét, Mbala (too similar to Impala), Shadi (would you want to be friends with a Shadi individual?), Wilma (too Flintstones-like), Zhen, and Zuri.

Frost sounds more like a last name to me as well.  I wouldn't mind having one person in the neighborhood with that first name, but I'd hate to see too many males with Frost as their first name.

Ethnicity doesn't bother me - I think quite a few names have very strong ethnic connotations.  I'd rather see some random ethnic mismatches than to have no ethnic names at all (I guess all names are ethnic, but you know what I mean).

I'd eliminate Rayen; like you mentioned, it is too close to Raven.

Nothing else bothers me out of your "chewing over" list.  If you really want to eliminate something then drop Zan (if you are going to keep Jan), keep only one of the 'Q' names (doesn't matter which one), Mustapha (was that from Lion King?), Aponi or Deseret (no reason other than least favorite on your list).

Either LeClere or Le Clere.

While it's not in any baby name websites that I know of, "Nakamo" taken literally would mean "middle child". Naka is center, middle and "mo" is usually a suffix that indicates youth or child. That is why there are a lot of japanese names that end in "mo".
